Whidbey Dogtrot by SHED Architecture & Design
SHED Architecture & Design designed Whidbey Dogtrot on a high-bank waterfront site on Whidbey Island, Washington. The compact house combines daily living space with a flexible room for guests, hobbies and working from home.
A covered passage between two volumes
The dogtrot is a sheltered outdoor breezeway, rather than the “sheltered breeze” described in the earlier version. One part contains the main bedroom, living room, kitchen and dining area; the other is a flexible space. Both parts and the passage sit under a shared roof.
The architect lists 915 square feet of living space and 281 square feet of flex space.
Privacy and the site
The design responds to nearby neighbors and the road through its openings and approach, while retaining views toward the water and surrounding landscape. The breezeway connects the rooms and allows passage to the waterfront side.
The owners helped select interior finishes and fixtures, including fireplace, bench and shelving details. The organizational idea is to separate everyday living from more flexible uses while keeping both within a compact home.
