Describe
In close collaboration with the homeowner, SHED Architecture and Design recently completed Whidbey Dogtrot: a compact home located on the bluff of Whidbey Island with sweeping views of Puget Sound.
Located on a large expanse of West and East Bank, the house has been carefully designed to make the most of its square footage while creating privacy from neighbors and the busy country road to the west. The result is a modest and functional dwelling that is firmly attached to its location.
The design challenge was to create a compact house for economy of operation, ease of maintenance, and space that maximized the natural beauty of the site. In addition, the house needs space for guests, visits from adult children, hobbies, music, and a home office. To accommodate the client’s goals, a dogtrot model was used – a sheltered breeze that separates the living quarters of 915 square feet and a flexible space of 281 square feet with a moment of respite from the prevailing sun and wind.
The living quarters comprise a master suite, living room, kitchen, and dining area – a unique and organized form with a separate reading room to the side. The homeowner was instrumental in the selection of lighting, interior finishes and fixtures, particularly the design of a concrete and steel stove and bench as well as steel shelving in the reading area. Using a limited physical palette, Whidbee Dogtrot is a home that seeks to amplify the experience of site living through an economy of means.
