The New Coexisting Robot in the form of Everyday Objects
Bopeep is a new coexisting robot that naturally blends into our lives in the form of everyday objects. Bopeep provides tailored assistance to each object’s unique characteristics and performs small, friendly actions that bring joy into our lives. Bopeep’s ultimate goal is to reach people’s hearts a little more easily with a familiar and lovely image, rather than emphasizing only the necessity and benefits of robots.
보핍은 일상 사물의 모습으로 우리의 삶 속에 자연스럽게 녹아들며, 각자가 가지고 있는 사물의 특성에 걸맞은 역할을 수행함과 동시에 귀엽고 친근한 친구가 되어주는 공생 로봇입니다. 일상적인 도움과 정서적 유대감을 동시에 제공하는 보핍은 우리의 삶에 소소한 즐거움을 불어넣고, 이전에는 상상할 수 없었던 새로운 공존 경험을 선사합니다. 로봇의 필연성과 유익함만을 강조하기보다는, 친숙하고 사랑스러운 이미지로 사람들의 마음에 조금 더 쉽게 다가가고자 하는 것이 보핍의 궁극적인 목표입니다.
Why are robots still unable to enter residential areas?
The project started with a simple curiosity about why, despite the impressive progress of industrial robots, robots that can assist and make everyday life more convenient for humans have not yet made their way into residential areas.
산업용 로봇의 눈부신 발전과는 달리, 일상생활 속에서 인간의 생활을 보조하고 편리하게 해 줄 수 있는 로봇은 왜 아직도 주거영역으로 진출하지 못하고 있는지에 대한 궁금증으로부터 본 프로젝트는 시작되었습니다.
The representation of the robot we have created
First, I examined people’s perceptions of robots. According to a survey on personal perceptions of robots, 86% of people still perceive robots as ‘cold, hard machines that only perform given tasks’ and have not deviated much from this context.
우선 저는 사람들에게 로봇이 가지고 있는 이미지들을 살펴보았습니다. 개인이 가지고 있는 로봇의 표상에 대한 설문 조사 결과, 로봇은 86%의 사람들에게 ‘차갑고 딱딱하며 주어진 일만을 수행하는 기계’의 맥락에서 크게 벗어나지 못하고 있었습니다.
The robots inside the house feel like strangers
The home, where we spend most of our time, is a comfortable and reassuring space. However, when the image of a robot is introduced into this stable space, it creates visual discord and psychological pressure that act as significant obstacles for us to accept robots as new members.
우리가 대부분의 시간을 보내는 ‘집’은 안정감을 주는 편안한 공간입니다. 하지만, 이 안정적인 공간에 로봇의 표상이 들어왔을 때 발생하는 시각적 부조화와 감시당하는 것 같은 심리적 압박은 우리가 로봇을 새로운 구성원으로 받아들이는 데에 큰 걸림돌로 작용합니다.
In order to bring the convenience and benefits of robots into our homes, we need to eliminate fear and unfamiliarity
Therefore, I believed that eliminating human fear of robots is the most important prerequisite for bringing the convenience and usefulness of robots into the home space. Because no matter how great the technology is, if it cannot approach humans, it cannot demonstrate its true value.
따라서, 로봇이 지니고 있는 편의성과 유익함을 집이라는 공간 안으로 끌어들이기 위해서는 로봇에 대한 인간의 두려움을 없애는 것이 가장 선행되어야 할 중요한 과제라고 생각했습니다. 아무리 좋은 기술이라 할지라도 인간에게 다가갈 수 없다면 그것의 진가를 발휘할 수 없기 때문이죠.

Bopeep, born with a new attitude and personality to coexist with humans, is not just a cold machine that performs only commanded actions or movements. Its ultimate goal is to reach people’s hearts a little more easily with a familiar and lovely image, rather than emphasizing only the necessity and benefits of robots.
보핍은 일상 사물의 모습으로 우리의 삶 속에 자연스럽게 녹아들며, 각자가 가지고 있는 사물의 특성에 걸맞은 역할을 수행함과 동시에 귀엽고 친근한 친구가 되어주는 공생 로봇입니다. 일상적인 도움과 정서적 유대감을 동시에 제공하는 보핍은 우리의 삶에 마법과 같은 경험으로 즐거움을 불어넣습니다. 인간과 공생하기 위해 새로운 태도와 성격을 가지고 태어난 보핍은 명령받은 행동이나 동작만을 수행하는 딱딱한 기계의 아닌 친숙하고 사랑스러운 이미지로 사람들의 마음에 조금 더 쉽게 다가가고자 하는 것이 궁극적인 의도입니다.
STEP
Introducing STEP, the strongest robot capable of moving any heavy object and other strenuous tasks in our daily lives. Born in the form of a stool, STEP is the strongest robot with the ability to move any heavy object with its sturdy four legs. To eliminate the psychological discomfort, the position detection camera is located underneath, where it is not visible to the human eye. In addition, the Omni wheel allows us to implement dynamic movements that bring liveliness to Bopeep, making it more approachable and enjoyable to interact with.
첫 번째로 일상에서 무거운 짐을 들어주는 등 힘든 일을 도맡아 대신해주는 공생 로봇, 스텝입니다. 스툴의 형태로 태어난 스텝은 가장 강한 힘을 지닌 로봇으로, 그 어떤 무거운 물건이라도 튼튼한 네 개의 다리로 성큼성큼 옮길 수 있는 능력을 지니고 있습니다. 사람들의 심리적 거부감을 유발하는 위치 인식 카메라는 평소에 사람 눈에 보이지 않는 하단에 위치해 있으며 보핍의 옴니휠은 생동감 있는 움직임을 구현합니다.
MINGLE
Next, let me introduce MINGLE, a coexisting robot with the gentlest and most courteous personality. Taking the form of a side table, MINGLE is the most thoughtful robot of Bopeep. It might seem a little odd to describe a robot as ‘thoughtful’, but that’s exactly what MINGLE is. With its flexible judgment of situations, it provides witty serving in everyday spaces, making our daily lives more convenient and enjoyable.
다음으로 소개할 친구는 가장 젠틀하며 매너 있는 성격을 가진 공생 로봇, 밍글입니다. 사이드 테이블의 모습을 가진 밍글은 가장 사려 깊은 로봇입니다. 로봇에게 사려 깊다는 표현이라니, 엉뚱하지 않나요? 밍글은 유연한 상황 판단으로 일상 공간에서 재치 있는 서빙을 제공하여 우리의 일상을 더욱 편리하고 재밌게 만들어줍니다.
TIDY
TIDY, born in the form of a wastebasket, is a robot vacuum cleaner and wastebasket. Despite its always-hungry image, TIDY has the cleanest personality and is responsible for overall hygiene in the house. When the user has something to throw away, TIDY quietly approaches with its mouth open. And during normal times, it cleans diligently and quietly, possibly due to its personality that cannot stand dust.
타이디는 휴지통의 모습으로 태어난 로봇 청소기 겸 휴지통입니다. 항상 배고파하는 이미지와는 달리 가장 깔끔한 성격을 가진 타이디는 집안의 전반적인 위생을 책임집니다. 사용자가 버릴 물건이 있어 타이디를 부르면 어느새 조용히 다가와 입을 벌리고 있으며, 평상시에는 먼지가 있는 것을 참을 수 없는 성격 때문인지 열심히 그리고 조용히 청소를 합니다.
CHEER
CHEER is the most intelligent mapping robot in the Bopeep series. It creates a real-time map of the house and provides other robots real-time spatial information while also giving them commands.
마지막으로 치어를 소개합니다. 치어는 공생 로봇 중 가장 똑똑한 매핑 로봇입니다. 치어는 실시간으로 집안을 매핑하여 나머지 로봇들에게 실시간 공간 정보를 전달하고, 명령을 내립니다.
A Reasonable way to make robots intelligent at the same time
Other robots of Bopeep connected to the SmartThings Hub through a mapping robot can achieve precise movement without LiDAR sensors based on the household’s 3D information provided in real time by the mapping robot, CHEER. This enables robots to become intelligent at a reasonable price, which greatly assists in bringing robots into households.
SmartThings 허브로 연결된 치어가 제공하는 집안 정보를 기반으로 다른 로봇들은 라이다 센서 없이 단순한 위치 인식만을 통해 정밀한 이동이 가능해집니다. 이를 통해 로봇들은 합리적인 가격으로 똑똑해질 수 있고 이는 로봇을 집안으로 들이는 데에 큰 도움을 줍니다.
The New Attitude & Rules for the coexistence
Bopeep was created with a completely different appearance and personality for smooth coexistence with humans. Bopeep also has a new attitude to help robots be accepted comfortably as members of human spaces.
보핍은 인간과의 원활한 공존을 위해 기존과는 완전히 다른 외형과 성격을 가지고 탄생하였습니다. 보핍은 또한 인간만의 공간에서 로봇이 구성원으로서 편안하게 받아들여질 수 있게 하기 위한 새로운 태도 역시 갖추고 있습니다.
1. Blend-In
Robots should seamlessly blend into our daily lives. One of the biggest factors that can cause discomfort or unease around robots is their ‘overbearing presence’. For robots to become a part of our daily lives, they should not draw excessive attention to themselves or their existence.
로봇은 우리의 일상에 자연스럽게 녹아들어야 합니다. 로봇에 대한 이질감을 유발하는 가장 큰 요소 중 하나는 바로 ‘필요 이상의 존재감’입니다. 로봇은 우리의 일상 자체가 되어야 하므로, 본인의 존재감을 과하게 드러내서는 안됩니다.
2. Humble
Robots should always have a humble attitude of wanting to help humans by making their best effort. The appearance of robots doing their best to assist humans can create a friendly and lovable perception of robots in people’s minds.
로봇은 언제나 노력하는 마음가짐으로 인간에게 도움을 주겠다는 겸손한 태도를 갖춰야 합니다. 인간을 돕기 위해 최선을 다하는 모습은 사람에게 로봇에 대한 우호적이고 사랑스러운 인식을 심어줍니다.
3. Refreshing
Robots should bring vitality to human life through a variety of appropriate judgments in various situations. Unlike the uniform appearance of existing robots that only act according to their purpose, the symbiotic robots that perform small and sometimes unnecessary actions resemble human behavior.
로봇은 상황에 어울리는 다채로운 판단을 통해 인간의 삶에 생기를 불어넣어야 합니다. 목적성에 의거한 행동만 하는 기존 로봇의 획일적인 모습과는 달리 사소하며 어찌 보면 불필요한 행동을 하는 공생 로봇의 모습이 인간의 행동과 닮아있기 때문입니다.
4. Cheerful
Robots should have warm hearts that inspire each other. Even when people are not around, the unconscious actions of supporting and interacting with each other’s roles when facing each other can act as a catalyst for making robots more friendly and approachable.
로봇은 서로를 북돋아 주는 따듯한 마음을 가지고 있어야 합니다. 사람들이 곁에 있지 않을 때에도 서로 마주칠 때 서로의 역할을 응원하고 상호작용하는 모습은 로봇을 친근하게 받아들일 수 있게 되는 계기로 작용할 수 있으며 이러한 무의식적인 행동들은 공생 로봇에게 귀여운 이미지를 부여하기도 합니다.
1. Human-Robot Relationship
In situations where it may be awkward or embarrassing for people to intervene directly, Bopeep is able to accurately identify the sensitive point and provide assistance while maintaining appropriate boundaries. For example, outside the bathroom, Bopeep may close its ‘eyes’ and not look at the user. As Bopeep’s ‘eyes’ are located underneath anyway, you don’t have to worry about it.
보핍은 사람이 직접 개입하기 어색하고 민망한 상황에서 보핍은 그 부담스러운 선을 정확히 캐치하고, 그 선을 지키며 도움을 줍니다. 화장실 앞에서는 사용자를 바라보지 않고 눈을 감는 것처럼 말이죠. 스텝의 눈은 어차피 아래쪽에 있으니 안심하셔도 괜찮습니다.
2. Robot-Robot Relationship
One of the reasons we feel psychological distance from robots may be because they only perform the actions or movements they are commanded to do. However, Bopeep gathers together with other robots, even in places where people are not around, and greets each other warmly and chats briefly as if they were meeting each other. But since they cannot spend too much time socializing, they eventually leave to do their own tasks. After all, they have work to do.
우리가 로봇에게 심리적 거리감을 느끼는 이유 중 하나는 바로 명령받은 행동이나 동작만을 수행하기 때문일 것입니다. 하지만 보핍은 사람들이 없는 곳에서도, 서로 마주칠 때 반갑게 인사를 하며 잠깐 이야기를 하는 것처럼 모여 있기도 합니다. 하지만 그 시간이 너무 길어지면 안 되기 때문에, 이내 곧 각자의 할 일을 위해 갈 길을 떠납니다. 할 일은 해야 하니까요.
3. Human-Human Relationship
When you are in an awkward situation with someone, having a cute dog wagging its tail can make a big difference. People naturally communicate more easily with each other through the medium of the dog. In the same way, Bopeep helps facilitate positive conversations and new relationships between people by providing a magical experience where objects come to life to assist with daily tasks. Bopeep becomes a mediator for communication, adding fun and excitement to people’s everyday lives.
어색한 자리에 갔는데 귀여운 강아지 한 마리가 꼬리를 흔들고 있다면 그만큼 고마운 상황이 없죠. 사람들은 그 강아지를 매개체로 자연스럽게 소통할 수 있게 됩니다. 같은 맥락으로 보핍은 사물들이 살아 움직여 일을 도와주는 마법과 같은 경험으로 사람들의 일상에 재미를 더해 사람들의 소통의 매개가 되어주어 긍정적인 대화와 새로운 관계가 오갈 수 있게 돕습니다.
Breaking down the emotional barrier towards robots and restoring their true value
No matter how great the technology is, if it cannot overcome the walls of unfamiliarity and fear in people’s minds, it will certainly not be able to demonstrate its true value. Therefore, the ultimate intention of Bopeep is to approach people’s hearts more easily with a friendly and lovely image, rather than emphasizing only the inevitability and usefulness of robots.
제아무리 좋은 기술이라 해도, 사람들 마음속에 있는 낯섦과 두려움의 벽을 극복하지 못하면 그 진가를 발휘하지 못할 것이 분명합니다. 따라서 로봇의 필연성과 유익함만을 강조하기보다는, 친숙하고 사랑스러운 이미지로 사람들의 마음에 조금 더 쉽게 다가가고자 하는 것이 보핍의 궁극적인 의도입니다.
The New Coexistence, Belief that Imaginations can become Reality
Bopeep’s new approach will serve as a stepping stone for the ‘life with robots’ that we will soon face. Through this, we will no longer fear the existence of robots and will be able to form affectionate and intimate relationships with them. Bopeep’s lively steps will announce the beginning of coexistence between humans and robots. Right now, in this very moment, our long-held imaginations can finally become a reality.
보핍의 새로운 접근법은 우리가 머지않은 미래에 마주하게 될 ‘로봇과 함께하는 삶’을 위한 디딤돌이 되어줄 것입니다. 우리는 이를 통해 더 이상 로봇이란 존재를 두려워하지 않고, 그들에게 애정을 갖고 그들과 친밀한 관계를 형성할 수 있게 될 것입니다. 이렇게 보핍의 경쾌한 스텝을 통해 인간과 로봇의 공존, 그 시작을 알릴 것입니다. 우리의 오래된 상상이 비로소 현실이 될 수 있는 것이 바로 지금, 이 순간입니다.
