MINING Club is an eclectic bar hidden deep within the bustling business district in Kunming, China, designed by Chinese architectural studio CUN FF. Under the influence of color, material, and light, lead designer Fang Fei presents a mysterious and dreamlike ambience and realizes a free, fresh and unbounded space for an indulgence of the senses. When the night is approaching, MINING provides people a space to unload the burden of work, to start self-exploration and release suppressed emotions and energy. Here, visitors can escape the mundanity of every-day life, and immerse themselves within a vibrant display of sound, light and colour.

mining: an eclectic display of sound, light and colour
Mankind’s dedication to pursuing order, efficiency, rationality and control over time and emotions has enabled the rapid development of the capitalist economy, and caused the dilemma of life and work. ‘How to be free from all kinds of dilemmas?’ questions Fang Fei. ‘In Charles Taylor’s ‘The Malaise of Modernity’, he mentioned self-determining freedom, that is, a decision is made by oneself, not determined by social influences’. With the design of the MINING, CUN FF seeks to create a free, unbounded place where people can go to explore the self, discover new ways of life, and seek extraordinary experiences.
The interior space is characterized by the distinct and vibrant sound, light and colour design to immerse the visitors in the out-of-the-ordinary experience and indulge their senses. In the bar, the vibrations of the sound waves are transformed into waves of light and color that never stop. The LED light strips adopt dynamic digital content to enhance the space’s ambience. The decorative metal frame is illuminated by neon lights, emphasizing its futuristic mechanical quality. Part of the main body of the bar is made of glass bricks, which balances the harmony between lightness and heaviness, and absorbs the neon light. At the end of the interactive passage entered from the bar side a laser device emits a red light beam, outlining the space, projecting information on the ground, and creating more interactive forms between guests and space.

a fluid, unbounded spatial arrangement
The casual seating area has less clear spatial boundaries, and the three surrounding walls have different expressions. With a floor-to-ceiling multimedia LED display screen wall on one side, a concise movable and foldable rectangular block covered with metal and a pressure hatch door on the other, and a third wall with a rough original stone, the space presents a unique contrast between brightness and darkness, openness and closure, continuity and discontinuity. The foldable wall offers flexibility and creates more possibilities in space. On the other side of the wall is a dance floor where a large open atmosphere is formed through the continuous and unified LED wall. In the middle of the space is the DJ booth, above which a circular LED light strip highlights the visual focus of the space.
