SUMMARY:BuildFest 2: Bethel Woods Art and Architecture Festival 2025
DESCRIPTION:Bethel Woods Art and Architecture Festival 2025’s BuildFest 2 – Peace Rises will unite faculty and student teams from universities across the United States to design and construct interactive wooden art installations on the historic grounds of the 1969 Woodstock festival. Over five days\, participants will live and work on-site—the legendary stage of performances by Jimi Hendrix and Joan Baez—spending their days fabricating\, assembling\, and installing large-scale works. Evenings will be filled with cultural programming including concerts\, exhibitions\, and pop-up events. Key Projects and ParticipantsTen projects of varying scales were selected nationally\, including: \n\nTwo Peace Pavilions (large-scale) \n\n\nThree Peace Hubs (medium-scale) \n\n\nFive Peace Pop-ups (small-scale) \n\nNotable works include a robotically fabricated cabin by Princeton University\, a canopy made from reclaimed timber and recycled plastics by Rice University\, and a reconfigurable modular timber monolith by Cornell University. Collectively\, these projects highlight how human creativity\, combined with timber construction innovation\, can foster architectures of peace—structures inventive\, grounded\, socially resonant\, and carrying forward Woodstock’s legacy as a cultural landmark and laboratory for peace-building in the 21st century. Public Events\n\nFriday\, September 12\, 8:00 PM – 12:00 AM: Headlining performance by experimental pop-rock group Guerilla Toss \n\n\nSaturday\, September 13\, 8:00 PM – 12:00 AM: BuildFest Closing Party \n\n\nSunday\, September 14\, 11:00 AM – 4:00 PM: Public Opening of Installations \n\nOn-site camping is available upon request. Venue and Admission\n\nVenue: Bethel Woods Center for the Arts\, located at the historic site of the 1969 Woodstock festival \n\n\nCost: Free event \n\nCuratorial Statement 2024The festival’s curatorial theme reflects on fire—humanity’s first technology—as a metaphor for emerging technological revolutions like artificial intelligence and autonomous construction. Fire\, a gift and burden from mythic Prometheus\, enabled creation and destruction alike. Similarly\, today’s technologies promise progress but also demand responsible use. BuildFest 2: Peace Rises explores how these emerging technologies might be embraced for human connection and ecological balance. It invites reflection on wielding technology as a force for collective good\, mindful of its potential to foster peace or cause harm. SponsorshipThe festival is made possible by Think Wood (Premier Sponsor)\, Andrew Jacobson (Rochester Institute of Technology trustee)\, Grimm Construction (family-owned Pennsylvania contractor)\, UNALAM\, and DeGraw & DeHaan Architects.
