The Danish architecture studio, BIG, has unveiled the Vancouver House skyscraper.

This is 155 meters high in Canada, which spirals upwards from a triangular base.

Design features

In 2020 the building was completed, but was recently photographed with a twisted shape derived from its location.

Alongside the slopes leading to the Granville Bridge in the center of town.

This distinctive shape was designed to ensure that the structure set back 30 meters from the bridge at its base, and also to avoid overshadowing a local park.

BIG co-founder Bjarke Ingels likens this to the constraints that led to the Flatiron building shaped like New York.

The Vancouver house is a contemporary descendant of the Flatiron Building in New York City, restoring lost living spaces.

Where the tower escapes from the noise and traffic is at its base.

In the Flatiron tradition, the architecture of Vancouver House is not the result of formal excess or architectural idiosyncrasies.

Rather, it is for the three-dimensional site conditions and concerns about neighboring buildings and park spaces.

Design form

The 52-story skyscraper rises from its base platform containing a gym, day nursery, and swimming pool.

The skyscraper covers an area of 60,600 square metres. Above the platform, it has a triangular outline,

which grows in a rectangular shape at the upper levels like a “genie coming out of a bottle”.

Vancouver House also subtly pops out of the ground and expands as it rises,

looking like a genie out of a bottle.

What looks like a surreal gesture is actually a responsive structure – shaped by its environment.”

The skyscraper has a lattice appearance on its east and west facades, created by regularly spaced balconies.

While the underside of its spur is characterized by box-shaped balconies.

BIG hopes that the project, along with the creation of several art spaces down the adjacent underpass,

will serve as a blueprint for the development of restricted sites in cities.

As this is an example of how urban design should be approached,

the transformation is shown on the Vancouver House website.

and how the public can reclaim forgotten spaces, below,

above and around infrastructure and provide spaces for artistic and community gathering.

The new urban space also responds to the city’s lack of cultural performance and event spaces,

by transforming the underside of the bridge into a public art venue.

BIG is one of the most famous architecture studios in the world.

A super spiral skyscraper is under construction in New York, and an “infinite loop” skyscraper is slated to be built in Hangzhou.
