DESCRIPTION:The 10th Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale will take place from July 17 to November 7\, 2027\, across the Echigo-Tsumari region of Niigata Prefecture\, Japan. Spanning 85 days\, the triennale is one of Japan’s leading regional contemporary art festivals\, bringing together art\, rural culture\, nature\, and community life. Set across the expansive Echigo-Tsumari landscape\, the festival presents contemporary artworks in fields\, forests\, villages\, vacant houses\, and former schools\, creating a unique connection between artistic practice and the local environment. Alongside hundreds of permanent artworks\, the 2027 edition will feature newly commissioned works by artists responding to the region’s distinctive cultural and natural landscape. The festival is deeply rooted in the concept of satoyama\, the traditional Japanese relationship between rural communities\, agriculture\, forests\, and nature. By placing contemporary art within everyday rural spaces\, the triennale encourages visitors to discover new perspectives on local heritage\, sustainability\, community\, and the relationship between people and the land. Covering an area of approximately 760 square kilometers across Tokamachi City and Tsunan Town\, the festival offers an immersive experience that extends beyond conventional exhibition spaces. Visitors can explore the artworks by rental car or organized tours while discovering the landscapes\, communities\, and cultural heritage of the Echigo-Tsumari region. The 2027 edition will continue the festival’s long-standing mission of revitalizing rural areas through contemporary art and creating meaningful connections between artists\, residents\, visitors\, culture\, and nature.
