LQS Architects has built a boutique hotel with 3D sculptural effects in Maoyang Town on the coast of Ningbo City, Zhejiang Province, China.
Design Features
The project was named as 10³ Boutique Hotel, and the plot of the project is called a typical house with its three sides surrounded by mountains and one side overlooking the sea.
The site is very close to a scenic area, so the client wanted to build it in a hotel and expected to get high profits.
LQS Architects has made this white cube building stand out uniquely among its surroundings, with modern design styles.
Thus, he became a landmark in this field and gained popularity among the youth.
10³ boutique hotel takes its name from the size of a common country house in China,
which is usually 10 * 10 * 10m, 10³.
For this project, the design team intended to break the stereotype of shared homes by adopting a geometric form, thus enhancing the diversity of the home’s design.
The design team has creatively transformed an originally boring semi-underground space into a swimming pool using plexiglass, making it one of the project’s highlights.
While the entire roof deck is used to maximize the hotel’s space,
the facades feature robust 3D cutouts and sculptural effects that enhance the building’s identity.
China’s land supply is under strict control, the project plot area is about one hundred square meters (10 * 10 m).
One of the challenges was how to improve the rate of use of the plot,
and to design more comfortable living spaces in a limited area of the site.
Other challenges lie in the limited budget, how to achieve a simple architectural style and leaning structures on a single façade.
Additionally, working with the unprofessional construction team made up of local villagers was one of the obstacles in this project.
Design shape
LQS Architects dug the plot to a depth of 0.9 meters, to enhance the rate of land use.
This increased the ceiling height to 3.1 meters,
creating a semi-underground space to accommodate the living room and dining room.
Meanwhile, a glass pool has been placed in the courtyard, bringing visual focus to the living room.
While the design team communicated closely with the construction workers about drawings,
models and renderings, during the project construction process, they eventually got the desired effect.
With the world’s population constantly increasing, saving land and improving land use has become an important goal.
The design team also created a building that combines today’s prevailing aesthetics with excellent functionality,
within a relatively limited plot area, and the project achieved significant social and economic benefits.
Currently the hotel is always fully booked, and it has become a successful model for building private country houses in China.
