The Sustainable Design China Summit in Beijing from the 21st to the 23rd of September 2023 was a tremendous success, drawing over 2000 professionals and 5000 exhibition visitors – of which 75% were trade visitors. This event highlighted the importance of creating a platform for those in design, architecture, development, or academia to join together in the strive for positive sustainable change. Orianna Fielding, the Chief Sustainability Advisor & Content Director, said of the summit, “This year focused on the imperative message that sustainability is no longer a choice. We showcased the successes, strategies and solutions of leading companies and experts to show that positive change is taking place worldwide.” As outlined in our previous article, the three-day summit was centered around six key themes.

Day One

Spatial design was highlighted as playing a key role in sustainable futures, specifically focusing on topics. Such as nature-positive design, biodiversity, Sponge Cities, and Passive House design. Circular design thinking was explored to understand its effects on waste reduction, recycling, and economic systems. Moreover, Renowned keynote speakers Orianna Fielding, Mario Cucinella, and Prof. EM Dr Wolfgang Feist, showcased the advantages of Passive House design.

Day Two

Aiming for Net Zero Carbon Emissions: An exploration into policies, passive building design, low-carbon materials, and smart building technology. Towards a Greener Future: Examining the potential and difficulties in achieving net zero with an emphasis on building sustainability into product design. Furthermore, Three extraordinary speakers, John Haffner, Dr. Raymond Yau, and Alwyn Li, to achieving net zero carbon output.

Day Three

At Holistic Hospitality, we delved into hospitality strategies which focused on enhancing well-being, minimizing environmental harm, and promoting employee health. Additionally, we explored alterations to the workplace, sustainability efforts, technological innovations, and well-being design at The Empathetic Workplace. Highly esteemed guests Lucky Chan, Qing Ye, and Pearl Tang addressed the audience.

The Sustainable Design China Summit is for specialists to connect to take on the challenge of climate change. Moreover, As part of Design Shanghai, the biggest Asian international design event. The next Summit will be June 19-21, 2024 at the Shanghai World Expo Exhibition & Conference Centre.
