Call for Entries for Kurula Varkey Design Forum: Final year student projects

The Kurula Varkey Design Forum is an international student led forum organised at CEPT University, India. Since its inception in 2000, the forum has strived to critically question the discipline of architecture and its manifestations at the given time through student projects as take-off points. We invite undergraduate student projects from over 100 architecture schools across South Asia, of which a few are selected as generators of the discourse. Over the years, KVDF has had panelists like B.V. Doshi, Juhani Pallasmaa, Suhasini Ayer, Tatiana Bilbao, Gautam Bhan, Kevin Low, Jeremy Till, and more.

This year, the forum aims to discuss the networks within which the profession operates. With a multitude of entities, agencies, and stakeholders affecting and getting affected by the design of the built environment, it becomes pertinent for the profession to look into the ‘(Inter) Dependencies’ that bind them together.

Theme for this year

The processes which create, alter, and dismantle the built environment, are layered by multiple influences forming a complex ecosystem. These influences include but are not limited to political, social, ecological, and economic aspects.

With an increase in the discourse on collaboration, it becomes necessary for the professional to assess their standing in this web. In what capacity does the role played by an architect (as a negotiator, facilitator, curator, etc.) affect their position in this web?

What agencies and (inter)dependencies exist in your project? What position do you hold through your project?

In this light, the KVDF ‘21 invites final year projects to reflect upon the web of relationships within their project, and define their position and architectural responses through this lens.
