Architecture School Meets Architectual Landmark
Bruce Mau Design was asked to work closely with the Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape & Design to develop a new visual identity and website that reflects a forward-thinking faculty, a transdisciplinary program, and an engaged student body who are together modelling new modes of practice. This request coincided with a 125 year anniversary and anticipation of a completed highly visible new facility at One Spadina Crescent, located on an island roundabout in the middle of one of Toronto’s main thoroughfares.
BMD’s identity proposal focused on 4 key aspects. First, signalling the Daniels Faculty as an active hub for a host of different practices and approaches. Second, complementing, instead of competing with, the new building’s own distinct visual language. Third, presenting an identity that is flexible and inclusive. Finally, helping to simplify, amplify and provide a short form for a complex name that stands next to the University of Toronto long form logo. The result is a flexible and modern black and white wordmark and layout system that helps consolidate the various sub-brands and programs.
The website approach was also about simplification and systematization of a complex entity. The site needed to engage prospective students and faculty by revealing a Daniels that is active, engaged, and encompasses a mix of disciplines. It also needed to provide a variety of practical information and technical forms for prospective and current students and stakeholders, from admissions to course timetables to IT support. While, the homepage is an aggregator of newsworthy information from across the site, the functional information is catalogued clearly. The Daniels site enables each audience to navigate through to the information that is relevant to them.
