Architecture Competition: RIBA International Prize 2024
The quest to find the most revolutionary building in the world has been started by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA).
One of architecture’s greatest international honors, the RIBA International Prize was established in 2015 and is given to a structure that exhibits innovative design, visionary thinking, excellent construction, and a notable impact on its users, the surrounding area, and communities.
One of the most meticulously reviewed architecture prizes in the world, the biannual prize involves a group of international design experts visiting each shortlisted building. It can be given to a building of any size, style, or price and is available to all licensed architects worldwide.
Projects must have social value in addition to being economically and environmentally sustainable. In June 2024, RIBA will also award about 20 buildings with RIBA International Awards for Excellence, which will take place prior to the prize announcement and after visits by local architect ambassadors. The grand jury will pay further visits to projects that make it to the shortlist for the International Prize.
The International Emerging Architect Award will also be given in recognition of the work of one “emerging” practice that has been in operation for ten years or less.
The Friendship Hospital in Satkhira, Bangladesh, designed by Khashef Chowdury/URBANA, was the recipient of the most recent RIBA International Prize, which was given out in 2021. It was commended for its commitment to the client’s philanthropic objective, use of locally and traditionally manufactured materials, and deft integration into its natural surroundings after being chosen from a shortlist of three exceptional entries.
After Grafton Architects earned the 2016 RIBA International Prize for The Universidad de Ingeniería y Tecnología in Lima, Peru, Aleph Zero and Rosenbaum were given the honor for Children Village in northern Brazil.

“RIBA’s International Awards celebrate and recognise buildings that boldly push design boundaries, embrace sustainable technologies, and drive meaningful change,” stated RIBA President Muyiwa Oki.
Our goal is to identify the most influential and ambitious projects in the world that offer solid answers to the social and environmental problems that communities all over the world confront.
All buildings that are submitted have to be outside of the United Kingdom, finished between December 2018 and December 2022, meaning that they will have been occupied for a minimum of a year and offering jurors additional crucial details such in-use energy performance.
On December 7, 2023, entries can be submitted until 17:00 GMT. For architects and practices without the financial means to enter, financial support is now given in the form of free or heavily subsidized entry.
Moreover, The RIBA International Prize 2024 winner will be revealed in November 2024 and will take part in a special ceremony held at the organization’s London headquarters.
