The Wates Group PhD Studentship: Quantifying the Benefits of Modern Methods of Construction.

Project Description:

The aim of this project is to provide a credible and visible evidence base for the benefits of modern methods of construction. The construction industry is a significant consumer of raw materials and natural resources and generates an estimated 39% of the world’s carbon emissions.

Innovation within the construction sector lags many other industries. While several modern methods of construction (MMC) have been developed in recent years which have the potential to significantly reduce the environmental impact of the built environment, the use of these methods has not become widespread. The ability and willingness of construction firms to develop and adopt modern methods of construction will be hugely significant in their progress against these targets but the complexity of supply chains means a holistic, interdisciplinary, and industry-led approach is needed.

The successful PhD student will work with experts from both the University of Exeter and the Wates group to carry out this research to enhance the understanding of how established and emerging construction methods can influence criteria including factors related to environmental sustainability, safety, and quality.

The research program will involve detailed measurements of buildings and their performance as well as advanced building performance analysis. Aspects of the research include identifying and quantifying the benefits of MMC, comparative studies of a new build constructed using traditional techniques vs the same building constructed using MMC, developing insights into the barriers and enablers of the use of MMC and identification of the behavioural changes needed for such methods to be implemented in different scenarios and the development of case studies from the Wates Group portfolio.

It is expected that the student will be primarily based in one the Wates group’s sites (either Leatherhead, London Euston or Coventry).

This award provides annual funding to cover Home tuition fees and a tax-free stipend.  For students who pay Home tuition fees the award will cover the tuition fees in full, plus at least £16,062 per year tax-free stipend.  Students who pay international tuition fees are eligible to apply, but should note that the award will only provide payment for part of the international tuition fee and no stipend.

International applicants need to be aware that you will have to cover the cost of your student visa, healthcare surcharge and other costs of moving to the UK to do a PhD.

The conditions for eligibility of home fees status are complex and you will need to seek advice if you have moved to or from the UK (or Republic of Ireland) within the past 3 years or have applied for settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme.
