Recognizing the Best in Home Design

The AIA Housing Award 2025 highlights the finest achievements in residential design, showcasing how beauty, safety, sustainability, and comfort can harmoniously converge. Homes are a necessity, a sanctuary for the human spirit, and often the most personal encounter with architecture.

Eligibility

  • Open to architects licensed in the United States.
  • Team projects may be submitted by any team member, not necessarily the team leader.
  • All contributors, including landscape architects and construction firms, must be credited.

Project Categories

  • New construction, renovations, and restorations are eligible.
  • Unbuilt projects are accepted in the Community-Engaged Design category.
  • Projects must have been completed after January 1, 2019.

Award Categories

  • One- and Two-Family Custom Residences: Recognizing outstanding custom home designs.
  • One- and Two-Family Production Homes: Highlighting exemplary designs for the speculative market.
  • Multifamily Housing: Celebrating high- and low-density housing for public and private clients.
  • Specialized Housing: Addressing unique housing needs, such as rehabilitation programs or shelters.
  • Excellence in Affordable Housing: Recognizing designs that meet affordability challenges.
  • Mixed-Use Community Connection: Integrating housing with community amenities.
  • Community-Engaged Design: Focusing on collaborative design processes.
  • Universal Dwelling Design: Honoring inclusive, human-centered housing innovations.

Evaluation Criteria

  • Equity: Contributions to social goals and community history.
  • Resilience: Adapting to climate and community changes.
  • Innovation + Delight: Demonstrating leadership in residential architecture.

Submission Details

  • Submission fee: $450 per project, with an additional $100 for each extra category.
  • Applications must be submitted online via the awards platform.

  • The 2024 winners include projects like Berkeley Way Apartments and Madrone Ridge.
