About the opportunity 

The University of Sydney welcomes applications for Sydney Horizon Educators in the academic disciplines outlined below, during an exciting and innovative time. With the introduction of the new University of Sydney Enterprise Agreement 2023-26, the University has committed to establishing and advertising new continuing education-focused (EF) academic positions, across The Sydney School of Architecture, Design & Planning.

The positions in this opportunity are for talented educators with a passion for, and demonstrated excellence in, educational practice and innovation, and research capability (in disciplinary and/or education-related research). This newly-recruited group of educators will support an uplift in the teaching capability and student experience at the University of Sydney, while also developing as leaders in the education space at the University. 

You will have the opportunity to make a significant contribution to teaching and learning design, delivery, and evaluation in your specialised field while you also contribute to research in relation to your discipline and/or your educational practice. As part of this role, you will also contribute to the governance, leadership, and engagement work of your employing school, particularly as it relates to education. 

Education-focused roles are a specialised category of academic engagement reserved for talented educators with a passion for, and demonstrated excellence in, pedagogical practice and design. The successful candidate will dedicate the majority (up to 70%) of their academic workload allocation to education and education-focused activities. We also highly value recognised expertise in higher education pedagogy, or the willingness to undertake additional development through, for example, completion of the Graduate Certificate in Education Studies (Higher Education) or comparable recognition (e.g. obtaining FHEA status). 

Over time, staff appointed to these roles will be supported to engage with professional development opportunities to build their capability to lead change and improvement in teaching at the University.

The discipline of design is rapidly growing and highly successful within the school. Our research explores and contributes to better futures: we envision, define, and inform the interactions between people, technologies, organisations, and society. Pushing the boundaries of pedagogical practice in interaction and innovation, we encourage our students to critically rethink and prototype new objects, systems, experiences, and materials that shape human experience and life on the planet through the lens of design. To address these huge and critical problems, our design staff come from all kinds of backgrounds, including mathematics, psychology, musical composition, community activism, and robotics. Recognising that design cannot happen in isolation, we actively collaborate across disciplines and with external partners, including industry, not-for-profit, government and community groups and organisations. 

Our discipline of architecture is experimental, critical and engaged. We extend the boundaries and critical edges of the profession through the interplay of conceptual engagements and the cultures of architecture and urbanism. We offer a broad range of undergraduate and postgraduate degrees across architecture, architectural design, architecture and environments, and architectural science (including audio and acoustics, high performance buildings, illumination, and sustainable design). 

Your key responsibilities will be to: 

  • In collaboration with program directors and unit coordinators, ensure measurable and sustained improvements in student experience and satisfaction
  • Deliver excellent teaching in core and elective units of study either leading casual academic teaching groups or teaching in studio yourself
  • Implement initiatives to enable consistent high quality of casual academic teaching as well as support casual academics’ satisfaction in teaching
  • Contribute to the evaluation of student experience and development of improved education delivery
  • Contribute to teaching and learning innovations including work-integrated learning.

About you

We are looking for candidates who understand the principles and pedagogy of good curriculum and assessment design, and who will make a significant contribution to improving the student experience at the University. Successful candidates will understand or be willing to learn the research principles around teaching and learning design, delivery, and evaluation. They will have a demonstrated ability to interact effectively with students, facilitating and guiding their learning in research, theory and laboratory sessions. They will also have demonstrated ability to conduct research and (at all levels) a willingness to develop a program of education-related research over time. 

We are therefore looking for Sydney Horizon Educators who have: 

  • A PhD or nearly completed a PhD or postgraduate qualifications in an academic field relevant to the discipline
  • Experience in assessment, feedback and learning by design
  • Experience in contributing to outstanding educational design, delivery, evaluation and outcomes
  • A developing network of relationships with key academic, industry or professional institutions partners and stakeholders
  • Demonstrated experience in supervising or mentoring others and/or coordinating team activities
  • Sound experience of teaching and learning, and the ability to contribute to teaching at undergraduate, honours and postgraduate levels in lecture, tutorial and practical settings.
  • A high level of interpersonal skills including the ability to work collaboratively with colleagues
  • A record of excellent teaching, learning, and assessment practice in a tertiary environment, as evidenced through student and supervisor feedback
  • High-level written and verbal communication skills
  • The capacity to engage students and enable a supportive, inclusive learning environment
  • Proven experience in designing, implementing and evaluating teaching and learning initiatives
  • A demonstrated commitment to excellence in undergraduate teaching
  • The ability to work collaboratively with other staff, including professional staff, and foster principles of equity, diversity and inclusion.
  • Experience in teaching in tutorials and/or design studios (e.g. architecture, interaction design)
  • Demonstrated ability in undergraduate teaching with experience in large cohorts (> 200)
  • Extensive leadership experience of studio teaching environment
  • Ability to work across different teaching teams
  • Demonstrated ability to quality-assure teaching materials and teaching delivery of others and yourself.
  • Knowledge of teaching technologies and different ways of supporting student learning, progression and wellbeing
  • A collegial approach and willingness to contribute to academic governance, engagement, and administration.
