Updates on engineering and architecture jobs available around the world

Applications are invited for Design Fellowships in the Department of Architecture. These part-time, fixed-term posts are available for 12 months from 1 October 2023 until 30 September 2024. All posts may be renewable annually, in certain circumstances. The posts are fractional, i.e. posts are 26% of full time, c. 9.5 hours per week, both in and out of term time.

The purpose of the posts is to teach architectural design on the MArch course which leads to the Part II qualification. These positions are rotating appointments, responding to changes and trends in the profession.

Cambridge’s Master of Architecture course is unique in its emphasis on a rigorous design research agenda that is developed by each student individually, based upon their selected subject and context. The structure of the course and learning outcomes are set by the department, with flexibility to allow students, with the support of the Design Fellows and programme leaders to develop their own projects dedicated to design-based analysis of the relationship between environmental, cultural, and socio-political considerations of their selected themes and sites.

The Design Fellows teaching on the postgraduate course are part of a team of 6 studio teachers, within a wider team of c. 30 studio teachers teaching architectural design across the Department. The MArch course has been split into studio groups, each led by a pair of Design Fellows. Each of these groups has c.12-15 students. Design Fellows will also contribute to horizontal teaching for the whole yearly cohort, c. 20-25 students per year. This could include studio reviews, workshops, and talks on subjects related to the programme, such as design research methods.

Candidates must have: a very good first degree or equivalent in Architecture, Engineering or a cognate discipline, with exemption from Part I of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) or equivalent examinations; a postgraduate Diploma, MSc, MArch, MPhil or equivalent qualification carrying exemption from Part II of the RIBA examinations; experience of studio teaching and current experience as a practice-based architect.
