Updates on engineering and architecture jobs available around the world
The Manchester School of Architecture is ranked 5th in the prestigious QS world university rankings and enjoys the unique context of being a collaboration between Manchester Metropolitan University and the University of Manchester. It is one of the largest Schools of Architecture in the country with over 1200 students (typically representing some 85 countries) and over 150 staff from diverse backgrounds and is proud to retain both its quality and sense of community despite its size.
The School is characterised by excellence, ambition, boldness, inquisitiveness, innovation, and social justice and responsibility. These facets generate a unique blend and balance between research led teaching, impressive and relevant research outputs (84% of research activity is world leading or internationally excellent), and extensive professional industry links, all of which encourage our students to cultivate their own unique approach to architecture and their careers thereafter. Imagination, we take it seriously! The School was responsible for 3 of the 9 impact case studies returned with Art & Design in the last REF, namely; “A neighbourhood model for age-friendly policy and practice: engaged design and research for urban ageing”, “Heritage action: discovering, preserving and celebrating post-war modern architecture”, and “Complex sustainable futures: disruptive technologies in urban transformation”.
Joining the Manchester School of Architecture as a Tutor you will be responsible for teaching design studio on our MA Architecture & Urbanism programme.
The role entails leading a group of students through a series of urban design studio modules, ranging from strategic, regional frameworks through to masterplanning and detailed design of the public realm or buildings within the masterplan. The course staffing is multi-disciplinary, representing the diversity of perspectives and issues within urbanism. Tutors must reflect a distinct approach to urbanism – for example from the perspective of planning, landscape architecture, development-led, community-led, or theoretically-driven – informed by the tutor’s expertise in either current research or practice. They guide a group of students through the design modules and contribute a lecture or workshop on their expertise to the wider student cohort. Administrative work will be required to manage aspects such as student attendance, feedback and assessment.
A qualification in urban design is essential, along with a background in urban design, planning, landscape architecture or architecture. The postholder must possess good leadership, organisation and communication skills, and be able to co-operate effectively as part of a large course team.
The postholder must be able to:
- Contribute urban design expertise across development frameworks, masterplanning and the detailed design of open space/buildings
- Drive a distinct approach to urbanism, leading her/his studio group through the stages of framework, masterplanning and detailed space design
- Take responsibility for the administration of their studio group
- Co-ordinate and accompany field trips
- Work co-operatively with the wider staff team and the course leader.
