Christian Louboutin’s Fascination with the Alentejo Region
The Portuguese region of Alentejo is one of those destinations that exudes a special charm, blending pristine nature with deep tranquility. This allure clearly left a mark on the renowned French designer Christian Louboutin, who developed a profound emotional connection with the area.
The Beginning of the Story
In 2023, while spending time at his home in the nearby Comporta area, Louboutin suffered an injury that required hospitalization. On his way back, he passed through the town of Melides, located about 30 kilometers away, an encounter that marked the start of a special relationship with the place.
The Charm of Melides
Melides boasts striking natural beauty:
- Golden sand dunes
- Stone pine trees
- A deep blue lagoon
This scenery, blending serenity and natural allure, captured his heart and inspired him to consider settling there.
From Admiration to Ownership
It wasn’t long before Louboutin decided to purchase a traditional fishermen’s cottage in the area, which he redesigned into a family-style retreat, combining the local aesthetic with his own personal touch.
The Birth of Vermelho Hotel
In collaboration with Portuguese architect Madalena Caiado, Christian Louboutin designed an architectural project named Vermelho, a word that means “red” in Portuguese. The hotel features 13 rooms, each with a distinct character reflecting a unique design vision, along with small wellness facilities, a hammered silver bar, and an in-house restaurant named Xtian serving traditional Alentejo dishes on handcrafted tableware.
A Dialogue Between Cultures
The hotel’s visual identity emerged from an architectural dialogue blending Louboutin’s French and Egyptian heritage with the local Portuguese character. Inside, azulejos (glazed tiles) intertwine with elements of architectural ceramics, while colors are arranged in a way that balances authenticity with innovation.
Project Expansion
Alongside the main building, the hotel added two separate villas, reflecting a desire to offer a diverse accommodation experience that combines privacy with immersion in the local atmosphere.
The New Chapter of the Vermelho Project
Following the opening of the main hotel, the project expanded with the addition of two nearby villas, managed under Marugal Hotel Management. One of them is La Salvada Villa, designed in collaboration with Egyptian designer Tarek Shamma, and set amidst a natural meadow blooming in a soft pink hue. Its exterior design evokes Moroccan kasbahs and can accommodate up to four guests.
An Interior Design of Harmony
Inside the villa, a warm sandy color palette prevails, accented with touches of red and indigo. These colors appear in details such as built-in seating upholstered in fabrics adorned with quatrefoil motifs, or in textile artworks by artist Jean-Louis Viaud. The living room features a glass ceiling that allows natural light to flood in, while antiques are incorporated under high ceilings to create a sense of spaciousness.
Connection with the Natural Surroundings
The villa boasts three rooftop terraces, ideal spots to enjoy gentle breezes, listen to the chirping of crickets, and watch the movement of trees in a serene atmosphere that blends seamlessly with nature.
La Maison des Bateaux: A Rustic Maritime Touch
In a more rustic style, La Maison des Bateaux embodies the spirit of a traditional whitewashed Alentejan boathouse, tucked away among tranquil rice fields.
Design Details Inspired by the Sea
The villa’s overall ambiance is simple and maritime in character, with lamps adorned with clusters of seashells, miniature boats decorating the walls, and a color rhythm flowing between white, deep blue, and warm sunlit terracotta tones.
Art and Furniture with a Personal Touch
Artworks by various artists stand alongside furniture pieces selected from Christian Louboutin’s private collection, giving the space a distinctly personal character.
Connection to the Outdoors
Through the garden pathway, guests reach a large, secluded swimming pool, a bright focal point under the sunlight, beautifully balanced with the cool shade that prevails in the indoor spaces.
