“Halo” – The Fast Pedestrian Bridge Connecting Vigo, Spain

Home » Projects » “Halo” – The Fast Pedestrian Bridge Connecting Vigo, Spain

The “The Halo” pedestrian bridge was inaugurated in February 2024 in Vigo, northwestern Spain, marking a major transformation in urban mobility. The bridge is part of the “Vigo Vertical” initiative, which aims to improve accessibility in the city’s hilly areas, providing a practical alternative for crossing the AP-9 highway. The innovative design of the Circular Bridge in Vigo is expected to become a landmark in the region.

Bridge Design and Components

  • Main Tower: A 36-meter-high concrete structure that supports the bridge and houses the elevators.
  • Elevators: The bridge features two high-speed elevators, each with a capacity of 17 people, ensuring quick and efficient pedestrian movement.
  • Circular Walkway: Measuring 86 meters in diameter, made of metal, offering panoramic views of the city.
  • Exterior Cladding: The bridge is covered with curved glass panels and self-cleaning surfaces, giving it a modern and sleek appearance.

Benefits and Impact on Mobility

Before the bridge was built, residents of the Areal district had to take a 2-kilometer detour to reach the Vialia shopping district and public transport stations. With The Halo, they can now cross the highway in just 30 seconds, significantly saving time and reducing traffic congestion in the area.

Operating Hours and Maintenance

  • The bridge is open 24 hours a day, but elevators close at 11 PM (1 AM on Fridays and Saturdays).
  • During nighttime closures, pedestrians must use the stairs, providing an additional opportunity for physical activity.
  • Most construction work was carried out at night, to avoid disrupting traffic on the AP-9 highway.

Recognition and Awards

“The Halo” has received multiple architectural awards, including the Architecture Masterprize, recognizing its innovative design and unique structure. Additionally, Vigo’s mayor, Abel Caballero, praised the bridge, calling it a remarkable tourist landmark in the city.

Usage Statistics

  • Over 4.5 million people have used the bridge since its inauguration.
  • The bridge sees an average of 13,000 users per day.
  • During the Christmas season, 1 million people used the bridge, highlighting its importance as a transport link and tourist attraction.
