Completion of the largest underground concrete museum in China,

Shanghai-based architecture firm Wutopia Lab has completed a museum featuring the

“largest thin-span underground shell-protected underground” in northeastern China.

The 16,650 square meter building has been named the Deep Time Palace.

It is also named “The Eye of the Palace Museum of the Prismatic System (Changchun)”.

The building changes the presence of light to take the form of a radiant halo.

The museum opened on May 18, 2023, International Museum Day, after six years of design and construction.

The building is “the first fair-facing decorative concrete building in Jilin Province,

the largest fair-facing concrete building in Northeast China,

and the largest thin concrete building – earth-protected and large-span underground building in China.

Symbols, metaphors, parallels, and more

In its early days, Changchun held the reputation of being the most developed city in East Asia.

Today it remains a pivotal industrial centre, resonating with echoes of its former greatness.

Her inherent pride radiates an unwavering optimism, refusing to give up.

The Prismatic System Palace does not take up much space,

so much so that it gives me the impression of a transitional palace

However, its construction shows meticulous attention to detail.

Where large surfaces harmoniously combine Western classical elements with restrained and graceful ornamentation.

In the northeastern corner of the palace stands the White Museum of the History of Northeast China under Japanese occupation.

Designed by master Zhikang, it features a gently sloping roof that curves down the main ridge of the palace.

These fragmentary pieces were collected in the previous text.

To maintain a stable museum scene, I think the art museum should adopt a more modest approach.

With this in mind, I concealed the Art Museum, avoiding any alteration to the existing atmosphere above.

Considering that both the palace and the exhibition hall follow traditional structures,

I decided to introduce the spacious structure commonly found in industrial buildings,

This creates expansive interior spaces to effectively showcase the city’s inherent pride.

Embracing elegant curves and using a series of rhetorical devices such as allegory, metaphor and association,

Let’s say the resolution of the great city’s quest to revive its former greatness in this new age.

At the same time, the Art Museum acts as a contemporary expressionist haven,

allowing for a re-examination of history and memory, and thus an understanding of the meaning of existence.
