This two-story, 2,200-square-foot Country House in Lake Rosseau, Muskoka, is purposefully simple. A pitched roof above an upper-level great room with beds below—so as not to compete with the natural surroundings. It is situated close to Georgian Bay in a rocky area that has inspired many Canadian painters. The double-sided living room fireplace, the kitchen island made of an enormous unpolished stone, and the bathroom sinks with carvings by Studio Paolo Ferrari all echo the exterior’s roughness. The other main interior material is Douglas fir, which covers the walls, floors, and ceilings and can be limed or bleached.

The blond wood is also used by the Toronto-based studio for all the built-in furniture and custom millwork. Such as the main bed, which is a stack of thick slabs that unifies the mattress platform and headboard.
