Marcelo Spina founded P-A-T-T-E-R-N-S in 2002 in Los Angeles as a speculative platform to explore an increasingly global design culture. A licensed architect in Argentina and the United States, Spina has more than 18 years of experience designing and executing distinctive projects worldwide. In his leading role as Principal and Design Director, he has pushed the office to take on larger and more complex projects maintaining a speculative edge and theoretical aspirations intact. Spina has taught at SCI-Arc since 2001, where he is also the coordinator of the Architectural Technologies Program.

In 2021, Spina released a book, “Mute Icons” that “challenges fixed aesthetic notions of beauty in architecture as both disciplinary discourse and a spatial practice within the public realm.” Part history, part theory, and part monographic atlas, “Mute Icons” includes contributions by Georgina Huljich, Guillermo Martinez, Ciro Najle, Marcelo Spina, Brett Steele, and Constance Vale.
