Sou Fujimoto Architects has revealed their design for the Hida Furukawa Eastern Development Station.

It is a regional community center that aims to enrich the life, leisure and culture of the people of Hida City in Gifu Prefecture.

Design Features

The site covers an area of 21,300 square meters, and its development is inspired by the unique nature of Haida, and symbolizes its past and future.

The center will include a university research base, student housing, an all-weather playground,

and commercial facilities, all interconnected to form one harmonious community.

Design shape

The main plaza will take the form of a bowl referred to in Japanese as otsuwa,

and a shed-like roof over intersecting lanes, inspired by the city’s traditional cityscape.

The plaza will be located next to the station, opening towards the city and “embracing pluralism and harmonious difference.

Its oval structure can also be entered from any direction, and will serve as a hub for pedestrians.

Paths continue under the structure towards the roof, where people can reach with a view towards the sky.

The project also aims to stimulate the numbers of tourists and improve traffic through the city,

as its combined functions combine to revitalize and enhance the city of Haida and secure a brighter future for it.

The arena will be revitalized with pop-up functions and activities, bringing together themes such as radiation and the future,

diversity and convergence, the individual and the group, nature and resourcefulness, exposure and protection.

Although the Utsuwa would serve as an intimate room, it would also frame the sky in its changing seasons,

as the terrain of the Hida Mountains continues.

The intent is to include Hida Takayama University, making the scheme a polyvalent focus that enhances Hida’s appeal.

Earlier this year, Su Fujimoto’s Hungarian House of Music,

a contemporary cultural landmark dedicated to music in Budapest’s City Park, officially opened its doors to the public.

Once considered one of the most anticipated projects of 2022,

the museum also offers a unique artistic experience that combines landscape,

architecture and exhibition design, all dedicated to creating music and sound.

After creating Sou Fujimoto Architects in 2000, Fujimoto moved on to designing buildings throughout Japan and Europe.

Many of his designs were built around his idea that the function of a building is determined by human behaviour.

Fujimoto was also selected as one of 23 architects to “reinvent” Paris, in 2019,

and his contributions to this project include the redesign of a plot of land in the 17th arrondissement of Paris.
