Matter of Memory

6 November، 2023 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

We constantly reframe our experience of the built environment, just as we do with memories. Uniquely in the field of architecture, memorials must take form subordinate to the narrative. Richard Joon Yoo and Eric Moed design these built monuments and memorials which meld together the essential elements of a memory: the people, place, time, and event. Furthermore, they carefully examine and analyze context to reframe the story and direct the design through material, technology, and making processes.

The ‘Matter of Memory’ presentation and accompanying exhibition explores Yoo and Moed’s design processes. Reframing the narrative and reshaping the physical form of a memory brings new potential to establish more equitable and just futures. Architecture is a tool to frame space, experience, and memory, so how do the transient contents of memory connect to their physical container of architecture? Through conversation and critical thinking, this dialogue allows us to explore how we can design impactful, meaningful, and enduring changes in the present for the future.
