Architecture Competition: FUNdaMENTAL Costa Rica!

Introduction

The Fundamental Design Build Initiative (created by Taller KEN) invites 10 early career architects and designers from around the world to further develop their approach to design and experiment at the intersection of design, social space, and landscape during a two month period in San Jose, Costa Rica. FUNdaMENTAL aims to exposes young architects from all around the world to all aspects of a built work of design — from site analysis through brainstorming, fundraising, project management, sourcing materials, pre-fabrication, onsite construction, all the way to preparing materials for publication. Accommodations are provided in the cultural center of downtown San Jose, Costa Rica. Travel and per diem expenses will be borne by the participants.

The Program

Design proposals will be presented in an informal critique setting throughout the duration with outside guest critics, formal presentations to local stakeholders. While in San Jose you will have the opportunity to work intensively alongside other students and regional professional architects including and experts, share your home culture, and challenge your own assumptions about architecture. Because of the international focus FUNdaMENTAL participants will continue to flourish around the globe for years to come.

Eligibility

Application is open to architects and designers from any part of the world that are pursuing their professional degrees in or related to architecture. Space is very limited and a diverse and international group is sought, consistent with previous Fundamental groups and Taller KEN’s philosophy. Participants are required to remain in San Jose during the two months period, respecting a regular work schedule.
