Heatherwick Studio Unveils Hatai – A Lantern-Inspired District in the Heart of Bangkok
In a recent announcement from Bangkok, UK-based Heatherwick Studio revealed the design for “Hatai”, a mixed-use development in the city’s Silom district. Inspired by the visual language of traditional Thai lanterns, the project aims to reshape the skyline. It blends contemporary architecture and cultural symbolism.
A Cultural Glow in Bangkok’s Urban Fabric
The buildings will take on a stacked composition reminiscent of glowing lanterns, creating a distinctive presence within the city’s silhouette. This composition is particularly striking after dark. The design celebrates Thailand’s cultural richness while offering a fresh architectural response to its urban context.
A Multifunctional Hub with Vibrant Public Spaces
Hatai will include two hotels—Six Senses and Narai Hotel—offering a total of 300 rooms. Additionally, it will feature a grand ballroom, dedicated conference areas, and a comprehensive wellness centre.
At ground level, the project will introduce over 5,200 square metres of public space. This includes a central plaza, an open-air market, a restored canal, a traditional shrine, event areas, and a nursery. The design is intended to support active street-level life through an integrated environment.
Architecture That Reconnects with Local Identity
Thomas Heatherwick, founder of Heatherwick Studio, commented:
“Thailand has a deeply rich culture and architectural history, yet many of the so-called modern buildings in Bangkok fail to reflect that. They feel anonymous and flat.”
He continued:
“Our goal was to create something that reconnects with the country’s heritage—through storytelling, texture, and emotional depth—while encouraging urban life at the street level with rain protection, greenery, and water features.”
Set to Open in Late 2027
Hatai is expected to open in late 2027. This will mark a major addition to Bangkok’s urban scene while offering a new model for culturally rooted, human-centred development.
