A New Project to Improve Medical Services in Iraq
China State Construction Engineering Corporation (CSCEC) has begun construction of a 100-bed hospital in Suq Al-Shuyukh district, located in Dhi Qar province in southern Iraq. This hospital construction project in Iraq is part of Iraq’s healthcare development plan, funded by $950 million from the Dhi Qar Reconstruction Fund.
Specifications of the New Hospital
The hospital will cover an area of 32,000 square meters in Suq Al-Shuyukh, west of Basra, consisting of six floors providing a comprehensive range of medical services. This hospital construction in Iraq will be developed as a turnkey project, meaning CSCEC will handle all stages from design to operation.
A Fully Integrated Medical City in Dhi Qar
In addition to this hospital, Iraq has signed an agreement with CSCEC to construct a “Medical City” in Dhi Qar, comprising seven hospitals with a total capacity of 750 beds. The facilities will include:
- A 200-bed general hospital
- A 100-bed pediatric hospital
- A 100-bed women’s hospital
- A 100-bed hematology and oncology center
- A 100-bed internal medicine and gastroenterology unit
- A 50-bed emergency hospital
- An outpatient campus
Advanced Medical Facilities to Support Healthcare Professionals
The medical city will also include additional facilities, such as:
- A forensic medicine center
- A research and training center
- A blood bank
- Accommodation for medical staff working at these newly constructed hospitals.
Project Expansion in Two Phases
This hospital construction plan in Iraq will be implemented in two phases:
- Phase 1 will cover an area of 9.3 hectares.
- Phase 2 will expand the project by an additional 3.9 hectares.
Government Strategy to Boost the Healthcare Sector
Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani emphasized that improving medical services is a top priority for his government. He stated that these projects are part of broader structural reforms aimed at enhancing Iraq’s healthcare infrastructure.
As part of this strategy, the government is planning to construct 16 new hospitals, each with a 100-bed capacity, across Iraq.Iraq has already launched five of these hospital projects this month, demonstrating significant improvements in hospital construction.
International Collaboration in Healthcare
The Iraqi government is actively working with renowned international companies to advance the healthcare sector. This collaboration includes hospital construction in Iraq, as was evident in the opening of the Iraqi-Korean Specialized Hospital in Baghdad last November. The new agreement with CSCEC reflects Iraq’s continued commitment to modernizing its healthcare services.
