In search of refuge for their Tribeca pied-à-terre, a young professional couple sought an abode that banished the fatigues of the outside world and as Dash Marshall partner Ritchie Yao put it, “hush the hustle”. While designing the open plan, the team sought to harmonize with the residents’ lives and honor their Chinese roots by adhering to the principles of feng shui, which led to the incorporation of curved shapes instead of the “poison arrows” of acute edges. Tying the whole 1,800 square feet together is a kitchen dressed in a girdle of solid white oak tambour.

To achieve an overall result that would suit the century-old oak millwork of Erica Holborn’s home in Pelham, New York as well as her midcentury-modern décor, SANDOW CEO Holborn opted for cabinets in a design that could both blend in and stand out. For the backsplash and countertops, stone became the best option, and the designers chose Jet Mist granite from Artistic Tile with a honed finish, which offers a velvety touch.
A Nautical Home Embraces Blue Hues
Tenka Arkitektura created a multi-functional home for a young family in a 1960s residential building, utilizing the space in a unique way. Beginning with an L-shaped layout and structural beams used for ventilation, they added an outdoor terrace and a sinuous, wave-like curved wall of blue to separate the kitchen, with its fluted grooves, from the living room and other more relaxed spaces. Ultimately, this enabled a much better use of the compact home.
