Situated at the enigmatic North Latitude 18°, LingShui, in Hainan, has been safeguarding its 500-year-long historical and cultural heritage. The Tanka Families who reside here make their living from the sea, establishing the latter as their home. They are commonly referred to as the “Gypsies of the Sea” and their marine fishing rows have been designated by Hainan Province as an intangible cultural heritage conservation project. It is with the theme of “LingShui Sea Nomadic Imagination” that an open competition for the spatial design of the sea-based marine fishing rows has been launched. This competition endeavor seeks to enhance the quality of life of the village inhabitants, preserve their local Tanka cultural heritage, as well as develop a lasting fishing industry operation.
