MARINE FISHING ROWS SPATIAL DESIGN COMPETITION

Situated at the enigmatic North Latitude 18°, LingShui, in Hainan, has been safeguarding its 500-year-long historical and cultural heritage. The Tanka Families who reside here make their living from the sea, establishing the latter as their home. They are commonly referred to as the “Gypsies of the Sea” and their marine fishing rows have been designated by Hainan Province as an intangible cultural heritage conservation project. It is with the theme of “LingShui Sea Nomadic Imagination” that an open competition for the spatial design of the sea-based marine fishing rows has been launched. This competition endeavor seeks to enhance the quality of life of the village inhabitants, preserve their local Tanka cultural heritage, as well as develop a lasting fishing industry operation.

There are two categories in the competition:

Track A:Upgrading and Renovation of Fishing Row Dwellings (~20㎡)

Improve the quality of life for Tanka communities by upgrading and renovating their existing fishing rows dwellings situated on the water. This should include but not be limited to renovations of fishing rows farming space, and interior and exterior dwelling spaces. Designs should take into account environmental protection, rainwater and wastewater management, and focus on eco-friendly, low-carbon and energy-efficient solutions. The suggested renovation budget should be limited to 30,000 RMB.

Track B: Public Space Design (>200㎡)

During the design process, participants should ensure that environmental protection measures, rainwater management, and wastewater management take priority, with a focus on eco-friendly, low-carbon, and energy-efficient solutions. Designs for public spaces on the sea should encompass a variety of functions, such as guesthouses, restaurants, bars, cafes, libraries, small theaters, art galleries, leisure centers, flower shops, creative cultural stores, and collective spaces. The designs should include small-scale commercial cluster planning, architectural cluster design, and individual building design.
