Mate (2022)

Very often we tend to spend a considerable amount of time using our smart devices, even when we are on bed, right? This notion was the foundation to start asking some questions such as – How easy is the transitions between the moment we need the devices and the moment we need to put them aside? How neat is cable management on common bedside tables? Surprisingly, this seems not to be a problem to consider while designing this kind of product, in general.
With “Mate” we wanted to address this issue as a real and existing one, especially considering the post-pandemic effects that led us to new routines in regard to the work from home, intensifying the use of technology to be productive in pretty much any corner of the house.
Its key feature lies on a removable and slidable table top, which allows for clutter free and easy cable management, but also lets the user to detach this component and use it as a laptop stand.
The balance between form and function is one of the major concerns at the studio, and “Mate” was no different. We looked at how frequently people use stools to be disguised and doubled as bedside tables, hence the design approach which resembles a stool, but with a fresh take. The overall aesthetics insists on rounded shapes and continuity of form to create a deeper relation between components. This can be perceived by looking at some particular details like the chamfered edges on the top or the contouring metal tube at the bottom, which adds extra stability and storage trough a fabric shelf.
With almost exquisite look, “Mate” is a minimal yet sophisticated bedside table. It’s multifunctionality doesn’t overload and makes it easier to use and comprehend.
