MICROHOME / Edition #10

Home » Competitions » MICROHOME / Edition #10

Overview

The 10th edition of MICROHOME marks a special milestone in Buildner’s ongoing effort to explore the future of compact, sustainable living. This edition is presented in collaboration with Kingspan, a global leader in high-performance building solutions, and Hapi Homes, a company transforming the way homes are designed and built through technology, sustainability, and prefabrication. Together, they invite architects and designers from around the world to take on the challenge of shaping the next generation of micro-living.

Participants are tasked with designing an off-grid modular microhome for a young professional couple, a benchmark household size used in all MICROHOME competitions. The total floor area must not exceed 25 m², pushing designers to balance spatial efficiency, livability, and sustainability. The competition invites bold ideas that rethink residential architecture at its smallest scale—while maintaining comfort, innovation, and practicality.

Designs should address real-world housing challenges, including sustainability, affordability, and adaptability. Projects may be set in any location globally, whether urban or rural, and should explore creative approaches to energy efficiency, off-grid functionality, and environmentally responsible material use. The strongest proposals will demonstrate not just conceptual strength, but also construction feasibility and scalability.

MICROHOME 10 offers more than recognition—it offers the opportunity to contribute meaningfully to the future of residential design. By embracing the constraints of small-scale living, participants are encouraged to produce visionary yet realistic solutions that respond to the needs of today and tomorrow.
