A Design of Form, Function, and Philosophy
Designed by Mike Wirthensohn, Round Off is a modular shelf system that connects seven individual elements through a simple plug-in mechanism. Each segment varies in size, resulting in storage chambers of different proportions. Despite their uniqueness, a unifying order is established by maintaining identical dimensions in the spaces between connections. This interplay of repetition and variation forms a visually rhythmic structure, where overlaps between the segments introduce additional display levels.
Available in two versions—as a wall-mounted unit or a freestanding shelf—Round Off can also function as a room divider, making it a flexible piece for modern interiors.

The Power of Connection
What truly distinguishes Round Off is its symbolic language. The edges of each segment that connect with others are rounded, while the untouched corners remain sharp. This design choice carries a deeper message: to connect, we must soften, without losing our individuality. We can retain our sharp corners, our uniqueness, and still be part of something larger. When we allow a bit of openness, we become part of a collective artwork—each individual vital, each segment essential to the whole.
“You don’t have to give up your space or your own edges, but if you are willing to become just a bit softer, a meaningful connection can emerge and something greater can be built together.”
Visual Rhythm and Graphic Impact
There’s a stunning contrast between the clean planar outlines and the interplay of depth within the structure. Viewed from different angles, Round Off reveals dynamic silhouettes and a shifting balance of light and shadow. The chambers create bold graphic profiles, while the inner spaces reflect nuanced gradients and textures, highlighting the artistry behind the engineering.
From Concept to Reality
The journey of Round Off began as an assignment in the Material Design course at HfG Offenbach, under the guidance of Prof. Markus Holzbach. The task was to establish a functional connection between at least five different objects. From countless iterations, the designer distilled a minimalist yet expressive concept.
“I started with sketches, then created CAD models and renderings. I explored how elements deform when pressed together. The overlaps fascinated me most, so I focused on that detail.”
This exploration led to the final composition: seven uniquely sized segments, one of which carries a “disruptive momentum” to introduce dynamism. While the segments vary, the overlapping areas are uniformly sized—bringing structure to what might otherwise feel like chaos.
After constructing a 1:3 scale prototype, the design was scaled up and fabricated in collaboration with Jaehde GmbH, a skilled metalworking studio in Eppertshausen, Germany.

About the Designer
This project and its story were thoughtfully developed by the designer Mike Wirthensohn. Round Off stands as a reflection of both conceptual depth and technical craftsmanship—a piece that explores individuality, connection, and design with equal care.
