Introduction

Chinese company Sany, known for manufacturing heavy equipment and onshore wind turbines, has entered the offshore wind turbine market for the first time. This move marks a significant milestone for the company, which plays a major role in China’s renewable energy sector, as it has received an order for offshore turbines for the Jieyang Shibeishan project in China.

Order Details

Sany received an order to supply a 10MW offshore turbine along with 14 additional turbines each with a capacity of 13.6MW, bringing the total capacity of the project to 200MW. The project is one of China’s first offshore wind energy initiatives and is among the first such schemes in the country.

The project has been developed in phases, with the first group of turbines being installed in 2007. With the replacement of smaller turbines with larger ones, the project’s capacity will be doubled, and its land area reduced.

The Shift Toward Larger Turbines

Since 2023, Sany has been expanding into the offshore wind turbine market by designing turbines with a capacity of 9MW. In October 2023, the company announced a test rig for turbines with capacities up to 35MW, aligning with the global trend toward larger and more efficient turbines.

The Jieyang Shibeishan project, which will feature the new larger turbines, will reduce the project’s land area by about 6 hectares, showcasing the efficiency of land use and modern technology.

Technological Advancements and Future Developments

Sany is striving to become a leader in the renewable energy industry through continuous research and development in offshore wind turbines. The company’s development of larger turbines aligns with the global demand for renewable energy and the effort to reduce carbon emissions.

Larger turbines may help reduce the number of units required to generate the same amount of power, contributing to more efficient use of space and improved operational efficiency.
