A Dialogue Between Form, Function, and Timeless Aesthetic

In its 2025 release, Praxis Furniture presents a sculptural collection composed of three distinct pieces: a chair, a stand, and a sideboard. Each piece is meticulously handcrafted from ebonised oak and brass, forming a trio that balances the refined weight of natural materials with the sharp intentionality of contemporary design.

This body of work explores the dynamic tension between art and function. At its core lies an investigation into the compositional layering of elliptical and square forms—an aesthetic dialogue that draws the eye to the intersections, the negative spaces, and the harmony born from contrast. The intention is not merely to create furniture, but to propose spatial experiences that feel both ancient and ultra-contemporary.

The work breathes with an energy of contradiction: sculptural yet usable, familiar yet abstract. These are objects that command presence—not just in how they occupy a room, but in how they provoke thought and reflection.

About Praxis Furniture

Praxis Furniture is the design studio and workshop of Lorenzo McKechnie, based exclusively in East London. Every piece is designed and handcrafted by Lorenzo himself, reflecting his commitment to process, quality, and creative autonomy. This hands-on approach allows the studio to focus on limited-run releases and one-off art objects—each one deeply considered and meticulously made.

Lorenzo’s journey into design is rooted in a non-traditional path. Having studied Philosophy and French Literature in London, he entered the world of contemporary furniture not through industrial or artistic design schools, but through a self-directed exploration of form and material. This background offers Praxis a perspective free from conventional design paradigms, fostering a unique, intuitive design language.

Though self-taught, Lorenzo’s roots in craftsmanship run deep. He is the grandson of Giovanni Lama, a respected furniture maker and restorer from north-eastern Italy. Much like his grandfather, Lorenzo views the act of making as a form of meditation—a space where the creative process itself shapes the outcome. For him, the integration of design and making is essential; each informs the other in an ongoing, evolving conversation.
