Wieczorek coal mine in Katowice to be transformed into sustainable technology hub
In a move set to reshape the identity of Katowice, Poland, the local subsidiary of Strabag has secured a €135 million contract for the first phase of an ambitious project. This project aims to convert the historic Wieczorek coal mine into a modern hub for technology and innovation. This initiative will establish the area as a sustainable tech hub.
The mine, which has stood for over a century, will see its original buildings restored and repurposed. These will house advanced laboratories and demonstration spaces, contributing to Katowice’s reputation as a sustainable tech hub. The plans include a public park, cultural venues, and restaurants, turning the site into a destination for residents and visitors.
The development forms part of a broader strategy to transition Katowice from an industrial city into a contemporary business district. As a sustainable tech hub, the project will collaborate with local educational institutions to deliver specialised programmes. It also aims to attract companies in sectors such as artificial intelligence and e-sports.
According to Strabag CEO Stefan Kratochwill, this transformation aligns with the company’s 2030 Strategy. This strategy focuses on adaptive reuse, regeneration, and leadership in future-oriented technologies.
The first phase is scheduled for completion in 2028, positioning the development as one of the leading technology hubs in Poland and Eastern Europe. With its emphasis on sustainability, the site will be a sustainable tech hub.
