Volume Zero, an international architecture and design magazine, has officially announced the results of the Tiny House 2024 Architecture Competition. This global competition aimed to celebrate individuality and sustainability through innovative architectural designs that redefine compact and resourceful living.
The competition invited participants to design a comfortable off-the-grid home for two people within 300 sq. ft., addressing not only their current needs but also anticipating future requirements. Through this challenge, designers explored the freedom and flexibility offered by mobile and compact housing concepts.
Entrants from over 46 countries submitted creative and sustainable solutions to this spatial challenge, making the competition a rich ground for architectural research and innovation.

Prize Distribution

🥇 First Place: Shifting Space
Harris Qaiser & Annie Cheng – New Zealand
Set in Tokyo, this modular tiny home offers a dual-function space for both residence and café, addressing urban housing issues. Its adaptable layout uses sliding partitions, a courtyard-inspired core, passive design techniques, and green roof technology to ensure sustainability and flexibility.
🥈 Second Place: Water Hunter
Arash Madani, Elaheh Ashoori & Fatemeh Zarini – Iran
Inspired by Anahita, the Persian goddess of water, this intelligent portable home uses atmospheric water harvesting, AI, IoT, and BCI to sustain nomadic life. It autonomously adjusts its internal systems and allows users to control the home via thoughts.
🥉 Third Place: Revolve
Stephen Centorrino & Owen Axisa – Malta
“Revolve” adapts to its users by rotating with the sun’s path, aligning with natural circadian rhythms. This dynamic, modular structure enhances well-being through passive solar strategies, environmental responsiveness, and customizable spatial arrangements.
🎓 Student Award: Culture is Structure
Arthur Legrain – France
A tiny home for mussel farmers in northern France, where the house integrates into the “bouchots” (mussel poles). Elevated above tide lines, it blends into the seascape and is accessible by boat or staircase, featuring living spaces separated by storage walls.
