Project Details:

Location and Overall Design:
The building is situated in a district known for its classical Italian-style architecture. Red brick serves as the primary material, harmonizing with the surrounding historic context. Italianate elements, including decorative columns, rounded arches, and projecting eaves, echo the area’s heritage while introducing contemporary interior touches.

Inside Zhongshuge: wavy black shelves form a tunnel leading to light and the city beyond.
A wave of shelves pulls you in dark, rhythmic, then opens to daylight. Reading here isn’t just quiet it’s cinematic.

Architectural Concept and Interior Design:
Inside, steel plates form undulating shelves, stairs, and seating that wrap around the central hall, guiding visitors through the space. Custom bricks in various shapes and sizes create layers and voids, producing a sense of lightness and transparency while expanding the perception of space. Every corner offers a refreshed visual and sensory experience.

Materials and Texture:
The raw finish of steel and brick highlights the natural qualities of the materials, creating a rich contrast between the warmth of the brick and the coolness of the metal. This combination emphasizes the multifunctional nature of each element, whether as book shelving, seating, or stairs.

✦ ArchUp Editorial Insight

Zhongshuge Bookstore in Tianjin presents an architectural exploration of contrast between red brick and undulating steel, where shelves, stairs, and seating generate dynamic circulation around the central hall. The layered brickwork combined with classical Italian details provides a sense of heritage and spatial cohesion. Yet, while the architectural language is clear, the spatial sequencing can occasionally challenge unpracticed visitors, raising questions about functional clarity and wayfinding. Nevertheless, the raw materiality and layered composition create a rich sensory experience, highlighting the design’s capacity to establish an open and inclusive environment for all users.
