Competition Brief

The 10 Cubic Meter Challenge calls upon the most creative minds, designers, architects, artists, makers, and others, to reconsider and realize the concept of space, its meaning, and the experience one can get there, given a very strict limitation to a maximum of 10 m3. The challenge invites participants to come up with a spatial idea, a structure, an object, or an installation that occupies completely this tiny volume, thus investigating how small space could unlock new living, feeling, or even thinking ways about the world. The contest focuses on the depth of the concept, the innovativeness of the space, and the expression of the design under strict volume limits.

Intent

The challenge intent is to move the participants to rethink density, adaptability, and the future of small spaces, not by making their designs less big but by using the limited volume as a provocateur for efficient and meaningful spatial strategies.

Purpose

The idea is to show that micro-architecture even in a very small space can easily be a subject of memory, care, provocation, adaptation, or speculation about the future ways of living. The challenge by limiting volume but keeping form open invites explorations of modularity, climate responsiveness, symbolic or ritual spaces, portable systems, and minuscule monumental forms.

Requirements

  • The designers will be the ones to come up with such a spatial concept that will be totally fitting in a total space of no more than 10 cubic meters.
  • There are no limitations as to the design shape; the only thing that is for sure is the fixed volumetric limit.
  • There has to be an A1 board for presentation, project description, visuals, diagrams showing how the volume requirement is met, and a story revealing how the design idea interacts with space in a thought-provoking way as part of the submission.
  • The competition welcomes participation from both individuals and teams (with a maximum of 4 members), and there are no geographic, disciplinary, or any other restrictions.

Jury

The competition is evaluated by a jury of professionals with diverse backgrounds in architecture, design, technology, and innovation:

  1. Dr. Khandaker Shabbir Ahmed – Professor of Architecture at Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology, expert in environmental design, bioclimatic urbanism, and sustainable cities.
  2. Phnam Bagley – French industrial designer, futurist, and aerospace architect with experience in technology, innovation, and human-centred design.
  3. Ar. Rizvi Hasan – Bangladeshi architect focusing on community-driven, context-responsive, and culturally grounded design.
  4. Maryam Saleh – Executive Director at a major institute of tech entrepreneurship and innovation, with expertise in connecting technology and market-ready solutions.

✦ ArchUp Competition Review

The 10 Cubic Meter Challenge is organised by Claymire, with moderate transparency as jury members and their expertise are listed, though detailed evaluation criteria are not publicly disclosed. The competition is conceptually driven, open to students and professionals, and focuses on exploring spatial reasoning within a strict volumetric limit, rather than promoting a specific city or platform. The prize pool (USD 1,500) is modest relative to the depth of design and narrative work required, positioning the competition primarily as a portfolio-building and conceptual exercise. The jury’s diverse expertise across architecture, design, and innovation supports a balanced assessment of creativity, spatial efficiency, and conceptual depth.

Critical Conclusion

The 10 Cubic Meter Challenge reframes the design problem by enforcing a strict volumetric constraint that highlights spatial reasoning, efficiency, and expressive potential within minimal space. The brief’s openness allows for a wide range of interpretations, from functional micro-architecture to symbolic or speculative installations. While the accessible entry fees and broad eligibility criteria support participation from both students and professionals, the relatively modest prize amounts may limit its appeal to some designers. The jury’s diverse expertise suggests a balanced evaluation, but the competition’s focus on conceptual depth over practical implementation means outcomes may remain largely theoretical. Flexibility in form and theme encourages creativity, yet the challenge remains demanding due to the strict volume boundary and the emphasis on nuanced spatial narration.
