Home » Events » 2022 World Capital of Design: Valencia

The World Design Organization (WDO), which advances the design profession globally, designates the World Design Capital® every two years. The goal is to honor communities that employ design as a tool to promote social, cultural, economic, and environmental development. The most recent cities selected are Turin, Seoul, Helsinki, Cape Town, Taipei, Mexico City, and Lille. They are a fascinating mix of cities that have made design a crucial tool for change.

Moreover, Valencia, Spain’s third-largest city after Madrid and Barcelona, will serve as the year’s World Design Capital. This book will serve as the launch point for a string of cultural activities that will take place in 2021 and 2022 to leave a design legacy that will endure in the social fabric of the city and the nation. Valencia is famous for its inventiveness thanks to the work produced there over the past 100 years in the fields of design, building, interior design, and illustration.

2022 World Capital of Design: Valencia

As the World Design Capital, Valencia’s job is to promote Spanish design while carrying out social reform and urban innovation. A cohesive civil society team, made up of corporate leaders, professionals, and designers, came up with the idea for the city’s nomination as their joint effort to effectively communicate the initiative’s ethos to businesses and political institutions for their support. The Associació València Capital del Disseny, which was in charge of the entire project, was established in this manner. The project’s goal is to draw attention to Valencia’s superior Mediterranean architecture, which symbolizes a variety of progressive values. Including inclusivity, joy, empathy, social justice, gender equality, sustainability, and education.

Furthermore, one of the key objectives is to promote Spanish design, giving Valencia more prominence. And positioning it as a national hub for the growth of design and innovation. To do this, the Comunitat Valenciana’s three provinces will come together in a unified story. Along with the well-known emphasis on Catalan design, there’s also Basque design and particularly because of this project, Valencian design. To advance the field of professional design, it also aims to establish networks and partnerships around innovation that involve participants from other fields, such as the social, cultural, and economic sectors. To improve the quality of life for the populace, the project also intends to contribute to the development of design techniques that ensure sustainable and inclusive development at the territorial level.
