A 19th-Century Parisian Apartment Restored with Monochrome Elegance and Playful Contrasts

In the charming historic town of Corbeil-Essonnes, just outside Paris, a 538-square-foot 19th-century apartment has been meticulously restored to its former glory. Once neglected for years, the space demanded a full renovation but with a twist. The challenge? To modernize the interior while preserving its original Parisian charm, including ornate moldings, an unusual dragon-embellished fireplace, and other architectural treasures.

Enter Atelier Opale, the design studio founded by Alexandra Gérard and Alice Lefebvre, who transformed this “superb shell” into a harmonious blend of historical reverence and contemporary boldness. Their clients, a young couple with minimal design experience, sought a home that felt unique, inviting, and reflective of the apartment’s storied past.

Honoring History with a Monochrome Foundation

“From the start, we preserved the moldings and the extraordinary fireplace,” explains Gérard. The designers wrapped the apartment in a soft, luminous cream tone, applied uniformly to floors, walls, and ceilings, creating a serene “monochrome box” that highlights the original details. To enhance flow in the compact space, they reworked the layout, introducing strategic sightlines and movement. “The new circulation creates openness a sense of spaciousness that didn’t exist before,” says Gérard.

The open kitchen, bathed in light from a glass ceiling, exemplifies this fluidity. Its minimalist cabinetry and warm wood accents bridge the old and new, while the dragon fireplace (a whimsical relic) becomes a focal point.

Graphic Contrasts and Tactile Textures

Atelier Opale injected drama through bold contrasts: chocolate-brown MDF panels line the living areas, a cost-effective yet striking choice that adds raw texture. “We kept furniture tones warm to play against the cream envelope,” notes Gérard. In the kitchen, coffee-and-cream checkerboard tiles echo this balance of tradition and modernity.

A Cocoon-Like Bedroom and a Bold Bathroom

Private spaces embrace softer touches. The bedroom, swathed in buttery creams and hints of cocoa, feels like a sanctuary. “The clients loved the all-white scheme especially since their dog is white too!” laughs Gérard. In contrast, the bathroom is a playful outlier, clad in powder pink, gray, and taupe tiles a nod to the owners’ desire for vibrancy.

Whimsical Decor and the Magic of Light

Though the furnishings are minimal, playful accents abound: a stainless-steel candle by Axel Chay, a vintage Tulip chair, and a photograph by Sarah Moon. But the true star? The light. “It’s soft, enveloping the first word you think when entering this apartment,” says Gérard.

This restoration masterfully bridges heritage and modernity, with Atelier Opale’s monochrome palette and strategic contrasts letting the apartment’s 19th-century bones shine. Yet, the bold bathroom and kitchen tiles feel slightly disjointed from the otherwise cohesive narrative perhaps a bolder thread linking these elements could have deepened the harmony. Still, the project excels in proving that small spaces can feel expansive when light, flow, and history are prioritized. The dragon fireplace, a quirky centerpiece, encapsulates the home’s soul: timeless, unexpected, and utterly captivating.
