AIA UK Excellence in Design Awards 2026
Competition Brief
The American Institute of Architects UK Chapter is now taking entries for the 2026 Excellence in Design Awards. This award is for people who design buildings and spaces. It includes architecture, urban design, interior design, and research. The American Institute of Architects UK Chapter wants people from all over the world to enter. You do not have to be a member of the American Institute of Architects to enter.
This year, the American Institute of Architects UK Chapter has changed the award categories. They want to make it easier for people to understand and judge the awards. The American Institute of Architects UK Chapter still really cares about the environment. When they pick the winners, they will think a lot about how the designs affect the environment and society.
The American Institute of Architects UK Chapter also has an award for students. This is called the Noel Hill Student Research Award. The American Institute of Architects UK Chapter has included this award in the Design Awards. The Noel Hill Student Research Award is for students who are almost done with school and people who have just graduated.
Intent
The awards want to honour buildings and plans that show design, respect for the area, and make a real difference to people and the planet. This programme is well known around the world. It mostly focuses on what is happening in the United Kingdom and the buildings there.
They are also giving out the Noel Hill Student Research Award, which means they want to make research and new ideas from students a part of the conversation about design awards. They do not want student work to be seen as something; the Noel Hill Student Research Award to be a main event.
Purpose
The main goal of this programme is to honour projects that really make a difference in architecture, urban design, interiors, and research. This programme has been going on for more than 30 years now, and it sees itself as a way for people to share their work that changes the built environment in their own city and around the world.
When you submit your work, the fees you pay go straight to helping the AIA UK community do things like teach people new things and give money to students who are doing research through the Noel Hill Student Research Award fund. The AIA UK is a charity, so it does not make any money for itself.
Requirements
The competition is open to architects, designers, planners, landscape architects, technologists, researchers, and visualisers. You do not have to be a member of the American Institute of Architects to join. Your projects have to follow the American Institute of Architects Framework for Design Excellence. They have to be your own work. If your project is already finished, it has to have been completed after 1 January 2023.
You can enter a project from anywhere in the world. However, if you want to enter the Excellence in UK Design category, your project has to be in the United Kingdom. For the Excellence in Global Design category, the main company has to be a registered company in the United Kingdom. You can enter many projects as you want, but each one will cost you a separate fee.
To enter, you have to fill out a form on the internet. Once you have submitted your project, you cannot make any changes. If you submit your project late or if it is not complete, it will not be accepted. The American Institute of Architects competition is looking for projects that follow the American Institute of Architects Framework for Design Excellence.
Award Categories
The programme includes five award categories: Excellence in UK Design, which covers outstanding architecture realised within the United Kingdom; Excellence in Global Design, for work by UK practices delivered internationally; Excellence in Interior Architecture and Design Innovation, for interior environments and spatial design; Excellence in Urban Design and Environmental Stewardship, for masterplans and place-based strategies; and the Noel Hill Student Research Award, for original Part 2 research.
Within each category, the jury may grant an Excellence Award as the highest distinction, a Merit Award for distinguished achievement, or Exemplary Citations for a particular standout aspect of a project. Not every category will necessarily result in an award.
Jury
The jury for the 2026 AIA UK Excellence in Design Awards has not been announced yet. No names or affiliations have been made public so far. ✦ ArchUp Competition Review
The 2026 AIA UK Excellence in Design Awards are organised by the American Institute of Architects UK Chapter, a long-established professional body, though the jury for this edition has not been disclosed, limiting transparency. The awards are professional and academic in nature, covering architecture, urban design, interiors, and research, including student work via the Noel Hill Student Research Award. Submission fees range from £79 to £199, but no monetary prizes are offered; recognition is purely through awards and citations. Given the effort required for detailed submissions, the main benefit for participants is portfolio enhancement and professional visibility, while jury expertise remains implied by institutional reputation rather than confirmed panel members.
Final Thoughts
The AIA UK Excellence in Design Awards really mean something in the architecture world. The American Institute of Architects is a well-known organization, and the UK Chapter has been doing this awards thing for over 30 years. That is a time, and it makes the awards very credible.
Some things are worth thinking about, though. One thing is that there is no money given to the winners. It costs between 79 and 199 pounds to enter. There is no cash prize or anything like that. The winners just get an award or a special mention at a dinner. For architecture practices that are trying to decide if it is worth entering, this is a thing to think about.
We also do not know who is on the jury yet. For something that has been around for 30 years, you would think they would at least tell us who is going to be judging the entries. Especially since people can already. The deadline is in April 2026. Not knowing who is on the jury is a problem.
The categories for the awards are pretty broad. Makes sense covering things like urban design and interiors, and student research. It is good that they are including the Noel Hill Student Research Award, which is a nice thing for students who are just starting. However, for practices that want to pay the lower Emerging Practice fee, they have to prove that they have been around for less than 10 years, which can be a bit uncertain.
Overall, the AIA UK Excellence in Design Awards are a deal and have been around for a long time. They are backed by an organization. The value of these awards is mainly about being recognized by professionals and being seen within the AIA network, rather than getting a lot of money. People who enter should know that going in.
