University College of Estate Management (UCEM) is the leading international provider of supported online learning for the Built Environment, with over 100 years’ experience in providing the highest quality learning opportunities for the industry. UCEM offers a range of property-related academic programmes at Diploma, Foundation, Undergraduate and Postgraduate levels, currently being studied by some 4,000 students in over 100 countries.

It really is an exciting time to be joining us as a Trustee. You will have the opportunity to make a valuable contribution in shaping the future of UCEM, as we work to implement our vision to be the Centre of Excellence for Built Environment Education and to become the world’s most sustainable university.

Our diverse Board of Trustees currently has twelve independent members, but due to completion of terms we are looking for at least four new Trustees to join us over the next twelve months. The Board is responsible for the overall governance, monitoring and strategic direction of UCEM. The Board works together with the Executive Team to ensure that the institution achieves the objectives defined in our Royal Charter and operates in compliance with all legal and regulatory requirements, including the Office for Students (OFS), the Charity Commission, the Education and Skills Fundings Agency and Ofsted. In addition to this, the Board contributes to ensuring that our institution meets the expectations of the Higher Education Code of Governance.

We are specifically looking for Trustees with:

  • expertise at a Senior Executive level within the built environment sector;
  • expertise in higher education (ideally at a Senior Executive level and with a good understanding of the regulatory environment in which UCEM operates and the challenges facing the sector at the current time);
  • expertise in sustainability as we grow our ambition and programme offering in this area.

However, if your area of expertise is not specific to these areas but you feel you can contribute to the work of UCEM your application will still be considered. Successful candidates should desirably have experience of operating at a senior level in either an executive or non-executive capacity. You will also have a passion for higher education and sustainability.

As a Trustee, you will be expected to attend Board of Trustee meetings (4 per year, in person) usually held at our office in Reading Berkshire or occasionally in London. There will also be an opportunity for you to be involved in a Sub-Committee to the Board. Involvement in a Sub-Committee/Working Group will require you to be available to attend approx. 3 additional meetings per year, usually held remotely.

We have a detailed job specification for this role so please, before applying, look at: www.ucem.ac.uk/jobs

For an informal discussion about the role please contact Jane Fawkes, University College Secretary to the Board, on 0118 921 4682 (j.e.fawkes@ucem.ac.uk) or contact Lyndsay Hughes, Clerk to the Board, on 0118 921 4642. (l.hughes@ucem.ac.uk)
