The role
The post of Lecturer in Energy Systems Technology will contribute to extending the research profile of Engineering at Exeter, particularly in areas related or complementary to Renewable Energy and Energy Systems Integration.
The University welcomes applications which build on Exeter’s internationally recognised research strengths in this area and face our research and teaching needs within the department. Research areas of interest include, but are not limited to:

The position of Lecturer (Education and Research) in Energy Systems Technology will be based in the Renewable Energy Group led by Prof Philipp Thies. The group is part of the Department of Engineering, led by Professor Ion Sucala (www.exeter.ac.uk/engineering). Engineering currently has over 90 academic staff across our Exeter (Streatham) and Cornwall (Penryn) campuses. Academics in the Renewable Energy group are based in our Cornwall (Penryn) campus and have particular expertise in Electrical & Power Systems Engineering, Energy Policy, Offshore Wind technology, Solar energy, as well as energy storage.
The department of Engineering has recently embarked on an ambitious strategy – Exeter Engineering 2030. Our vision is to harness the power of engineering and innovation to create a sustainable and healthier future. The strategy is underpinned by significant investment in staff and facilities, and it aims to build on our existing strengths and continue to develop emerging areas, contributing to the University’s Strategy 2030.
Main duties
- To fulfil research, teaching and administration duties as Lecturer in Energy Systems Technology.
- To support the Engineering Department in extending the profile of this research area by attracting and supervising exceptional postdoctoral researchers and postgraduate research students, contributing towards the winning of significant research income, and by undertaking elements of the day-to-day running of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.
- To collaborate with colleagues both within the Faculty and the University of Exeter as a whole to develop and support the groups research programmes and other research programmes.
- To contribute to the general operation of the faculty as a member of its academic team.
About you
The successful applicant will have an independent research programme that will strengthen and complement the existing team at the University. You will be able to demonstrate the following qualities and characteristics:
- A PhD or equivalent experience in System Engineering, Sustainable Architecture Energy Planning, Systems Engineering or another relevant subject.
- Sufficient knowledge in subject area to develop teaching and research programmes.
- A demonstrable potential to attract research funding.
- A track record of excellent publications in recognised journals.
- The aptitude to develop familiarity with a variety of strategies to promote and assess learning.
- Enthusiasm, knowledge, and ability to teach modules in Sustainable Architecture and Systems Engineering and more widely, as required.
- A track record of attracting research collaboration with industrial partners.
