Updates on engineering and architecture jobs available around the world

Harper Adams University is growing it’s Land and Property Management team to meet increased student demand and is hoping to find new Lecturer/Senior Lecturers with the drive and enthusiasm to make a difference for the next generation in the land based sector.  Most of our students are working towards an exciting career as a rural practice, chartered surveyor or other areas of rural land management, at a time when we are dealing with a complex world of competing land use demands. We are therefore looking to expand our team and recruit a number of new colleagues, ideally with expertise in one or more of the following areas:

Rural Planning Practice

Our students study the UK planning system in the context of rural development, anything from agricultural buildings through to housing developments and major infrastructure projects. They need to understand the key elements of the system and how it operates in practice. Anyone who has advised clients on the potential of their proposal gaining planning permission, promoted land through local plan reviews, or submitted planning applications would be able to bring their knowledge and experience into the classroom.

Agricultural Systems

Agriculture and farming is at the heart of all land use decision making in the rural world.  Employers consistently feedback that they want graduates that have a good understanding of agriculture and farming systems. This understanding underpins the advice that land and property managers provide, whether that be rent reviews, planning applications, compensation, valuation or the environment and the changing policy environment within which agriculture must now operate.

Valuation

The ability to estimate the value of land and property is a key discipline for the Chartered Surveyor upon which all stakeholders reply upon to make effective land use decisions.  Whether that is valuing farms and farm land, or valuing residential commercial or retail property.  Our graduates need careful tuition in the factors that affect the value of rural property assets and the markets within which land and property is traded.  They need guidance and be able to draw on professional experience in the application of the five methods of valuation and they also need to understand the regulatory environment within which valuers must operate and report their valuation figures.

Land and Property Law

Land and property law underpin most aspects of rural land and property management. We need to ensure that the students posses a sound working knowledge of how the law affects the management of land and property (in particular the different legal and third party interests which may exist in land and the processes by which an interest in land may be acquired), agricultural, business and residential tenancy law.  As our courses have a rural focus a thorough understanding and knowledge of the law as it relates to tenancies regulated by the Agricultural Holdings Act 1986 and those by the Agricultural Tenancies Act 1995, covering, amongst other items termination of tenancy, obligations to repair and insure, and the setting of appropriate rents, would be particularly beneficial.

These are exciting opportunities for enthusiastic and motivated individuals with ambition to work with and inspire the next generation and become an integral part of our academic team. Relevant professional experience will be just as valuable as academic experience and so if you are not currently an academic but have considered a career in teaching and learning, now might be the perfect time to join us.

We can support you through your teaching qualification as you play a key role in the delivery of a variety of modules for apprenticeship, undergraduate and postgraduate students.  If you already have academic experience and want to expand your experience in rural land and property management, this opportunity could provide you with the opportunity to develop your own research and academic interests at a time when rural land and property management and land-based decision making is rapidly evolving.
