The Arab Shipbuilding and Repair Yard (ASRY) has allocated one of its berths to receive large shipments of construction materials, in coordination with the Ministry of Industry and Commerce, the Ministry of Works, and the Ministry of Transportation and Telecommunications, along with national construction companies. This initiative aims to ensure a continuous supply of essential materials like gabbro to support infrastructure and housing projects, significantly improving the supply of construction material in the region.
ASRY has already received the first shipment under this plan, totalling 27,000 tons, as part of a strategy to import 250,000 tons in the coming months. Dr. Ahmed AlAbri, CEO of ASRY, stated:
“We are committed to supporting the construction sector by strengthening local supply chains.”
Challenges and Solutions
Bahrain is facing a severe shortage of gabbro, previously imported mainly from the UAE. However, rising domestic demand there has reduced exports to Bahrain, leading to an annual supply gap of 1 million tons, price increases, and project delays, affecting construction material supply.

ASRY’s Role and Expected Benefits
With 16 berths spanning 5 kilometres, ASRY offers advanced logistics solutions for importing and distributing construction materials. This initiative is expected to:
- Reduce transportation and storage costs.
- Ease pressure on local construction material suppliers.
- Diversify import sources and reduce dependency.
- Strengthen Bahrain’s regional competitiveness in construction.
