The Blue Foundation is hosting a design competition aimed at merging marine conservation with art. The competition seeks to celebrate the cetaceans of the Mediterranean, particularly within the Pelagos Sanctuary, a protected marine area between France, Italy, and Monaco. The region’s cetaceans, including Fin and Sperm whales, face significant threats from human activities. This project will bring attention to their plight through the creation of a submerged sculpture off the coast of France, offering a free, publicly accessible underwater art exhibit.
Objectives
- Showcase Beauty and Vulnerability: Highlight the beauty and vulnerability of Mediterranean cetaceans.
- Foster Appreciation: Encourage appreciation for marine life among the general public.
- Raise Awareness: Increase awareness of the risks and challenges faced by cetaceans.
Design Brief
Target Audience: The sculpture should be designed to appeal to beach visitors, including children, as well as swimmers and snorkelers. The visual impact of the sculpture from above, looking down into the water, should be a primary consideration.
- Location: Le Pradet, France.
- Water Depth: The sculpture will be placed at a depth of 4-6 meters.
- Sculpture Dimensions: The maximum occupied space for the sculpture should be 5×20 meters, with a maximum height of 2 meters.
- Safety Considerations: The design must avoid sharp edges or small gaps where humans or marine animals could become trapped or injured.
- Submission Requirements: While animation or video submissions are encouraged, they are not required. Images of the sculpture from different angles are sufficient.
Prizes
A total prize pool of 3,000 EUR will be awarded.
