Call for international workshop Metaform is now officially open till October 1st, 2020. The event will take place from 19th till the 30th of October 2020 in Tbilisi, Georgia.

The workshop is held in the frames of the Tbilisi Architecture Biennial (co-funded by Creative Europe) and in cooperation with the Heinrich Böll Foundation Tbilisi Office – South Caucasus Region. Students and professionals from around the world are invited to participate in the workshop. Participation is free and possible by physical presence as well as online.

Lecture Series by internationally prominent architects, historians, and artists will create a framework to rediscover the context of Tbilisi and understand its architectural, urban, political, and socio-economic characteristics. Through formal reading and other methods of analytical thinking in architecture, students will produce drawings that will be published and exhibited on October 30th in the Former Archaeological Museum, Tbilisi and online.

Those interested in the participation in the workshop are welcome to fill out the official registration form.

The list of selected participants will be announced on October 8th.

Objectives

The workshop focuses on the historic city of Tbilisi as a cultural field covered by architectural artifacts materialised from continuous fusion with European, Asian, and Soviet architecture. The essence and structure of those artifacts are currently forgotten and waiting to be rediscovered.

The workshop aims to provide participants with knowledge of architectural analysis. It gives an opportunity to see the building with its parts and the whole, to read architectural ideas and structural compositions that are present in the work. This methodology will be used to rediscover the encoded intelligence in Georgian architecture and to rethink the knowledge accumulated.

Through the methodology of formal analysis, 10 buildings are selected to be analysed and materialized in various analytic drawings, schemes, and diagrams.

Outcome

Metaform will develop a new architectural vocabulary, giving the possibility to rediscover intellectual instruments and methods of articulation. Consequently, it will be possible to learn from the indexes and signs of the past and encourage the formation of the shared professional intellect to be able to answer the question of ”what do we have in common” in the cultural field, on a local and global scale.
