Free

A collaboration between the Technical University of Crete’s Digital Media Lab (DmLab) and the Greek National Opera (GNO). The performance is a part of the centennial celebration of Maria Callas birth, organized by the Greek National Opera. It is also included in the Greek Ministry of Culture’s proposed 2023 UNESCO Maria Callas Anniversary. The workshop will be held at the Greek National Opera in Athens, Greece, from December 1–7, 2023.

The Greek National Opera and the Digital Media Lab at the Technical University of Crete are collaborating to jointly organize Visualising the Voice of Maria Callas, an innovative educational session, as part of their continuous partnership.

In honor of the events commemorating Maria Callas’ 100th birthday, this workshop will explore new avenues for fusing music and architecture, as well as space and sound. It will also attempt to visually represent the finest soprano’s sound through the use of cutting-edge digital media.

Visualising the Voice of Maria Callas

The workshop’s special goal is to give participants the chance to comprehend how to employ creative new media technologies. In order to explore methods of capturing interactions between Maria Callas’ voice and the spaces of the Greek National Opera, participants will play with three-dimensional models (3D point clouds) of the scanned interior spaces of the GNO building designed by Renzo Piano. These models were produced as a result of a previous research project by DmLab.

As a result, virtual and hybrid installations will be made, which when combined will show this well-known person in a completely new light. Digital versions of the final products will be shown in Athens and Chania in appropriate exhibition locations as well as on GNO TV, the Greek National Opera’s online TV station. One of the best modern opera houses in Europe, the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center, is scheduled to host the first exhibition on December 7 at 17:00, inside its foyer, while Chania will host the second one in the spring of 2024.

The workshop is open to everybody, but it is especially appropriate for people with a background in computer science, music composition, scenography, or architecture, as well as those who can showcase their sophisticated 3D modeling and virtual reality (VR) and digital art talents.

The scientific committee will choose up to ten (10) participants, who will get complimentary physical attendance to the workshop. They will use programs like Blender and TouchDesigner to work on the supplied 3D models. In addition to touring the Greek National Opera’s numerous locations, participants will attend a number of lectures and practical tutorials.
