This was the challenge faced by spouses and professional partners Marina Hernández and Rafael Callero, founders of Chi.Studio, when renovating their family’s rural home in Spain’s Extremadura region. While they wanted to preserve the home’s memories and historical value, they also sought to make it suitable for contemporary life.

Preserving the Essence While Introducing Modernity

The house is located in the countryside of Cáceres province, surrounded by stunning natural landscapes and ancient oak trees, making the preservation of the environment a top priority. The architects explain: “The biggest challenge was designing a space that respects the past while meeting present-day needs. Every element here from the granite stones to the structures built by our grandparents holds deep emotional and historical value.”

To achieve this, the duo focused on:

Minimal Structural Intervention: Avoiding unnecessary demolition and repurposing original structures.
Local Materials: Such as granite and sustainable wood, ensuring harmony with nature.
Smart Spaces: Despite the modest interior size (~700 sq ft), the layout was optimized for comfortable living, complemented by a spacious terrace (323 sq ft) that blends indoor and outdoor areas.
