HOWARD WATERFALL RETREAT

Home » Competitions » HOWARD WATERFALL RETREAT

Overview

The Howard Waterfall Retreat Competition invites architects and designers worldwide to create a multi-generational family retreat that blends with the natural and historical surroundings of Howard Falls in Northwestern Pennsylvania, USA. This is an opportunity to design a structure that respects the heritage of the Howard Family while embracing modern architectural solutions.

Participants must design a new structure that complements the site’s natural beauty and historical significance. While the original summer cottage, built in the early 1900s, does not need to be preserved, its legacy should be reflected in the design. The project must include shared spaces for family gatherings, private accommodations, and a seamless connection between architecture and nature.

Submissions should propose versatile, sustainable, and forward-thinking designs that integrate:

  • Sustainability features such as green roofs, energy-efficient systems, and responsibly sourced materials
  • Site constraints including floodplain setbacks, elevation changes, and local biodiversity preservation
  • Design gestures honoring the original cottage, such as echoing its roofline, facade details, or repurposing materials

Participants must develop comprehensive architectural proposals, including detailed plans, sections, perspectives, and visualizations that showcase the spatial quality and functionality of their design. Winning projects will potentially be realized, creating a lasting architectural impact on this historic location.
