Date and Architectural Identity
The Jumeirah Capri Palace Hotel, formerly known as Europa Palace and later Capri Palace, represents a significant part of Capri’s rich architectural history. This hotel was designed in the 1960s by Italian designer Gianfranco Frattini, who brought creative touches blending modernity with tradition. The original commission was made by Cesare Cassina, the co-founder of the famous Cassina brand.
The New Vision
However, these transformations were not limited to the revival of the design, but also saw a renewal in the aesthetic and design concepts of the hotel. It was essential to present a contemporary architectural vision that reflects the spirit of the era while respecting the heritage of the place. Patricia Urquiola, who has served as Art Director at Cassina since 2015, was the ideal choice for this task. Urquiola reimagined five of the hotel’s main suites, focusing on blending classic and modern styles.
Merging History with Modernization
The process might seem like a bold step, but it follows a unique theme found in hotels that draw strength from the interaction between the past and the present. Through Urquiola’s studio, a special partnership was formed, combining uniqueness and innovation. This collaboration reflects a shift in understanding the relationship between contemporary design and cultural heritage, where the aesthetic foundations are preserved while incorporating new elements that align with modern times.
Capri: Between the Past and the Present
A Personal and Intellectual Connection to the Island
Alberto Zontoni, CEO of Urquiola Studio, says, “Capri is special to us for several reasons, not only for its past but also for its present and future.” These words embody the vision of Urquiola Studio for the project, where the island has been a reference point for understanding how history influences the present and guides the future.
Capri’s Relationship with Architecture and Design
Capri’s relationship with architecture and design is not superficial; it is a long-standing dialogue between art and heritage. The island has been a center for architectural and design innovations over the decades, notably with the “Casa Malaparte,” one of the icons of Italian modern architecture. “Casa Malaparte” embodies the unique relationship between form and function and has inspired some of the greatest designers such as Ettore Sottsass and Philippe Starck.
Inspiration from the Past
The strong influence of Capri can be seen in Urquiola’s designs, where modern techniques are inspired by the island’s history, creating a balance between tradition and innovation. The new designs presented by Urquiola Studio are based on concepts derived from this historical relationship.
A Significant Event in Capri’s History
The designers also had a personal connection to the island, as Capri was the venue for the launch of the “Hand Written Stories” project by Patricia Urquiola in 2017, in collaboration with curator and critic Hans Ulrich Obrist. This project was revealed during the inaugural edition of “Nomad Capri,” a mobile platform for collectible design and contemporary art, which added a new cultural and artistic dimension to the island.

The Five New Suites at Jumeirah Capri Palace: A Blend of Contrast and Harmony
Exploring Influences and Contrast
The five new suites at Jumeirah Capri Palace overflow with a refreshing spirit that blends the cultural and aesthetic influences that shaped their design. Under the collective title “Mariorita,” a tribute to Mario Cacchasi’s wife, the original owner of Europa Palace Hotel, the project unveils an exploratory concept centered around the contrast between elements.
Colors and Natural Components
The project introduces itself through a calm salon that serves as a prelude, harmonizing soft white, bluish tints, and earthy neutral tones. These colors create an organic and sensory atmosphere that evokes comfort and enhances the feeling of tranquility. This balance in colors reflects a harmony between modernity and the island’s natural spirit.
A Blend of Heritage and Modernity
As for the materials used, terrazzo floors are a thoughtful choice that connects modern design with local heritage. These floors reflect Capri’s traditional character while adding a contemporary touch. On the other hand, the columns are surrounded by handmade vitreous tiles, reflecting the rich Italian craftsmanship and giving the space a unique artistic character.

The New Suites at Jumeirah Capri Palace: A Design that Reflects the Essence of the Island
A Design that Reflects the Island’s Natural Spirit
From the small “AnyaCapri View” suite to the “Deluxe Terrace” suite and the exclusive “Terrace Pool Side” suite, all of the suites are designed to highlight the radiant essence of Capri Island. As Urquiola reflects, these suites embody “organic elegance” and “multi-layered history,” representing the comprehensive experience visitors can enjoy.
Mediterranean Comfort and Sophistication
“Each suite is designed as a small, serene world,” says Urquiola. This concept is reinforced through the use of sensory materials, natural light streaming through the windows, and flowing shapes that enhance the sense of comfort. These elements harmonize with the Mediterranean essence, offering each space a blend of supreme comfort and elegance.
Connection to Nature
Nature plays a fundamental role in the design of the suites. Some suites offer expansive views of the Bay of Naples, while others allow guests to enjoy a unique perspective of Mount Solaro through curved windows. In every suite, nature remains present, whether through the undulating plaster walls that echo the rhythm of the waves, or the indoor plants that soften the edges and add a natural green touch.

Furniture: A Blend of Sustainability and Innovation
Sustainable Materials in Design
The furniture in the new suites at Jumeirah Capri Palace reflects the philosophy of sustainable design, balancing beauty with function. The “Erasmo” planters, made from a sustainable cement-based mix, serve as an example of using eco-friendly materials to create attractive designs. These planters combine environmental benefits with modern design, enhancing the guest experience and aligning with global trends in sustainable design.
Innovative and Recyclable Lighting
The “Almendra” lighting system by Flos embodies a balance between aesthetics and sustainability. Inspired by almond tree branches, this lighting not only symbolizes innovation but also exemplifies recyclability, contributing to a reduced environmental impact. The lighting blends seamlessly with the surrounding nature and adds an elegant artistic touch to the spaces.
Biodegradable and Eco-Friendly Furniture
The “Politi” chairs by Andreu World represent another step towards sustainable design. These chairs are not only comfortable and durable but also fully biodegradable, making them an ideal choice for environmentally-conscious spaces. Furthermore, these chairs can be composted once their lifespan ends, contributing to a sustainable lifecycle.

Local Crafts and Creative Vision: Merging Tradition with Innovation
Mastery of Local Crafts
Urquiola emphasizes that the project would not have been complete without drawing on the mastery of local crafts, particularly the iconic Vitri tiles, which are an essential part of Italian heritage. These tiles are not just a decorative material; they reflect local traditions passed down through generations. However, the design vision aimed to use these traditional elements innovatively, surpassing mere tradition.
Merging Traditional Crafts with Contemporary Styles
One prominent example of this integration is the “Torchon” mirror by the Venetian Studio 6:AM. This design features the ability to combine traditional glass-blowing techniques with contemporary embellishments. This fusion creates a unique artistic piece that reflects both craftsmanship excellence and design innovation simultaneously.
Custom-Designed Details: The Balance Between Beauty and Sustainability
In her other designs, Urquiola’s signature touch appears in custom-designed details, such as the embroidered rug that combines traditional aesthetics with a modern flair. Additionally, the “Simon” tables from Glass Italia were designed to explore sustainability possibilities in glass design. This process adds an environmental dimension without compromising the quality and beauty of the design.

Open Design: Merging Nature with Luxury
A Moment Suspended Between the Sea and Sky
The design philosophy continues into the outdoors, where the pool area and the outdoor bar embrace the enchanting natural landscape. Urquiola mentions that the goal was to “create a suspended moment” for guests, a vibrant space between the sea and the sky, offering them a unique experience that combines serenity and adventure in the heart of nature.
Honoring and Redefining the Spirit of Capri
Urquiola adds, “This project was about honoring the spirit of Capri while creating new memories through design.” This statement encapsulates the profound vision behind every detail of the project; the island’s unique identity has been preserved while contemporary touches reflect the spirit of Capri in innovative ways.
Tradition and Renewal in Materials
Urquiola’s design for the Jumeirah Capri Palace Hotel represents a renewed architectural language for the beloved island. The architectural tradition of the island has been followed, though not in an overly literal way, as the design leans toward using more environmentally respectful materials. This experimentation with materials reflects a commitment to sustainability while maintaining aesthetics and functionality.
